I'll put in a vote for WP7 support. Looks like the new mobile OS from Redmond is gaining momentum and it could end up being Android, ios & WP7 as the heavy hitters in smartphones.

Thanks for sharing this idea!

If we were to develop something for WP7 what would you expect/want it to look like?

I for one would not expect it to look like anything. (Total invisibility would be just fine!) Just knowing that my usage data was being sent to an accountability partner would be what I'm looking for!

exactly what Christopher said. All IP usage data, right to my accountability partner, all the time.

I want it to integrate with any browser I use (I know that WP7 and 7.5 currently only have one browser, but that may change later). I do NOT want it to have to be a separate browser like on the Iphone. I want there to be a little icon to let whoever uses that phone that it is being monitored (like if one of my kids picks it up, for example). I love the icon for the Windows 7 desktop version I am using; the little eye tells me--and anyone else--"we're watching you" (my wife and other accountability partner). All I want it for is to monitor my browser usage; nothing fancy about monitoring texts, GPS, etc. Possibly an app store reporting function, as well.

I'm with Christopher, I don't really care what it looks like and all it needs to do is send usage data to my accountability partners. Something in the background like the app for Windows Mobile 6.0/6.1 devices would be best. Thanks for what you all do!

Yes - I would very much appreciate an app for Windows Phone. I just (stupidly) spent money on one and now don't trust myself to use it. I have had to give it to a friend. It's a great phone & I'm confident WP7 will be BIG. I hope you can develop something!! Is there anything in the pipeline?

Same situation here, but had a Windows 6 phone and made an insurance claim and now can't install on the replacement. Severely disappointed. May cancel internet service on phone or unfortunately move to another company's filter knowing it won't be a awesome at CE but better than nothing. I love CE and want it on Windows and Android phone desperately!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Did it get replaced with a Windows Phone 7 from the claim or another Windows Phone from the earlier platform?

As a Windows Phone 7 app developer, the platform currently wouldn't be able to support something like CovenantEyes unless all your browsing happens within the CovenantEyes app. Any link you click from within email or text and the search button will still use the default browser. =(

That's too bad, but this is how the CE app for iPhone currently works. Something similar on WP7 would still be valuable, I think.

I think Microsoft is much more committed to having a program like running in the background than Apple is. Sure, Steve Jobs said "if you want to look at porn, get an Android" (only partially true at the time). Of course, with the current CE product for Android working very well, users have a choice; an iphone or an Android.

I would love if CE developed something for windows 7 phone. Someone said something about going elsewhere to find support but not sure if anyone else is running anything for us on windows 7 either. So please CE develop something!

Hi Sam,

It's definitely something that we are looking at closely to assess the platform and what we can/can't do based on its technical restrictions.

Hopefully we'll have more to pass along soon!

Thanks for your interest,

Unfortunately, we don't have any news to report. We continue to explore the Windows Phone platform but unless something drastic changes, the outlook is fairly bleak. While I agree that it's a really compelling new OS and may eventually gain some level of user adoption, the constraints of the system in both 7 and 7.5 (Mango) really prevent any sort of reliable accountability solution.

It's something we will have to keep an eye on as we see any updates and especially when we get a better look at the phone version of Windows 8.

Hi All-

Microsoft has created a forum for suggestions for WP7 features, I added one for parental controls/accessibility for monitoring or filtering apps. You can vote for at the link below. Search IE Parental Controls or click on the Web Browsing category, right now it is at the top of the second page. Doesn't hurt to tell MS what we're looking for!

Seems like they've made unlocking WP7 pretty simple and fairly innocuous with the chevron utility. Would it be possible to create a CE version for unlocked devices? Or even to delete IE from an unlocked device?

I'm pretty impressed with the work that the ChevronWP team is doing to facilitate a homebrew community on the platform. I did see that they had some issues with their recent release and have stopped selling unlock tokens for the time being.

While their efforts are promising, it's my understanding that all this unlock tool provides is the ability to side load applications onto a phone, basically to install an app without going through the app market.

While this is an interesting step, it's not something that gives us greater ability to protect a windows phone. Also, to deliver a newly developed side load app to customers would mean they would all have to go through the ChevronWP unlock process as well as download, install, and use the Microsoft WP development SDK to get the app onto the unlocked device, while still not providing any sort of secure solution for the device.

We continue to hope that as this platform evolves, we will see more possibilities for protection.

Too bad about the restrictions MS has placed on developers for WP7. Any news on potential for CE apps on Windows 8 tablets/phones in the future?

In the mean time, hopefully MS will at least provide some sort of parental control to lock down usage of IE mobile and Bing image search. We'll see...

It's too early to be able say anything about Windows 8 on tablets and phones. We haven't seen anything concrete about what Windows 8 will be like on those devices. There's a lot of speculation that it will be a lot like desktop Win 8, but with only the Metro half, and none of the desktop Windows part.

Hopefully that is not the case, as that would not bode well for a good CE solution for these devices. Once we can see some real documentation or some form of developer preview from Microsoft, we should be able to provide a better assessment.

Mr. Caswell,

Microsoft has been known to allow certain developers greater access; also, Nokia has more flexibility to make changes in WP. Given that both Nokia and MSoft are courting developers and apps pretty agressively, and given that Nokia likes to pay for and provide 'exclusive' apps I would suggest contacting Msoft or Nokia and seeing whether they would be interested in compensating CE for developing an app (personally, I think monitoring AND filtering should be pursued). Msoft surely knows that for many parents/families and concerned adults this functionality may be a key selling point on a smartphone.

Thank you for looking into the possibilites,
Brad

No real updates on this topic. Unfortunately the ability to provide any sort of reliable, secure system for accountability on Windows Phone remains non-existent. With no way to monitor traffic from other apps, we would be limited to creating our own browser on the phone without the ability to force the use of that browser. So, in effect it would be so easy to work around as to be ineffective.

We definitely continue to watch the platform for changes that would provide the ability to offer a quality accountability product on Windows Phone.

Hey Guys-

Any progress on WP 8? Seems like there is a lot of streamlining going on between phone/tablet and even PC in the Windows 8 environment, one app to rule them all perhaps? :). I could definitely see using CE on a Win 8 tablet (surface or otherwise) and phone if it was available. Thanks!

I'm considering switching from my WP7 phone, which I love, to an Android phone, which I don't love, because there is no CE product for WP7 due to WP7's limitations. My question is whether there is any hope WP8 support. If there is then I'll either wait for your WP8 product or get a cheap Android phone to tide me over. If not, then I'll get a high end Android phone and mourn the loss of my windows phone.

Give me some hope or put me out of my misery..

Unfortunately, we won't be able to answer that for quite a while yet. Microsoft is opening up an early version of the Windows Phone 8 SDK on September 12, but only to developers who have already published a Windows Phone 7 app in their store. Other developers will not have access to the SDK until Windows Phone 8 is publicly released on October 29.

Since we will really only be able to begin looking at what might be possible at the October 29 release, it will be some time before we will actually have a definitive answer as to what sort of Covenant Eyes solution might be possible.

Sorry for the lack of news.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for all your hard work with CE.

From what I've read on WP8, it seems Microsoft has removed many of the restrictions imposed upon developers for WP7 and WP7.5. Its unity with the broader Windows 8 Platform seems to be leading WP8 to be a far more flexible OS.

As such, it might be possible to integrate CE with the default IE browser in the ways Howard Hawkins (see top comment) wanted. The android/Windows 7/OSX-esque tiny icon should definitely be achievable, as should (at the very least) monitoring the connection in a manner similar to CE on OSX.

As WP8 is really being pushed as a mainstream alternative to IOS and Android, WP7 devices will increasingly become a redundant niche in the market occupied only by the original Lumias- the 800 and 900.

As WP8 will have mutliple manufacturer support, will be massively plugged by Microsoft, Nokia, HTC and Samsung (to an extent) and whichever carriers decide to support WP8, it makes more sense for CE to be developed for WP8 than WP7 at this stage. Analysts are even predicting WP8 will have around a 15% share in the smartphone market in the next 5 years, so I'd definitely be keen for CE for WP8.

That's my two cents!

Thanks a lot, and keep up the good work! God bless!

I know you're still trying to see feasibility for CE on WP8, but just wanted to +1 this feature if it's possible. Considering switching from Android to WP8 (or WP9) in about a year.

Yes please - I also have an Android phone and really want to switch to WP8. I have been able to upgrade for a month now.

I don't want to upgrade to it or plan to upgrade to it until I know what plans there are for CE to be on it.

Also, if Covenant Eyes was to be on WP8, do you know yet if you can use their browser to watch or would you have to create your own CE WP8 browser? This would make a difference in my decision as well. Thanks guys!

I would love to see support for Windows 8 phones as well. Particularly if it were on the OS level (like on the PC) and tracking all IP data rather than simply using a different browser. I currently use the iPhone CE browser, but it doesn't run our internal work application. The OS level monitoring is a much better way to go.

Thanks!
