Windows VPN

After installing the latest update and switching to Screen Accountability I am no longer able to use my school's VPN (through Cisco AnyConect). Because of this I do not have access to some web-services I need.

I'm unsure if it is the new version of CE or the Screen Accountability that is blocking me. When I opened the dashboard to see the log of what was happening on my machine it didn't show any information for after I made the switch to Screen Accountability.

Does anyone else have this problem?

Hi Jacob!

Let me ask you one question first: do you use our filtering option or are you an accountability-only user? If you use our filtering option, we set your computer's DNS settings to use CleanBrowsing's settings, and I'm wondering if those might be interfering. However, if you're accountability-only, that shouldn't be the case.

It may have been the DNS. I tried to test this by having my admin turn off the filter option and after refreshing CE I was unable to access the internet at all. When I troubleshoot the problem it said it was a DNS setting.

I had to completely uninstall CE to get internet back. Now I have it installed without the filter option and I am able to connect to the VPN.

Interesting. We've had recent bug reports that some customers have that DNS setting get into a broken state after an upgrade/install where internet access is altogether disabled, but an uninstall/reinstall seems to fix it.

It's entirely up to you, but when you have time if you'd like to re-add the filtering, you might give that a go. If I'm right and your computer was in that broken state then it shouldn't be anymore, and the CleanBrowsing DNS setting, when in a working state, might be compatible with your VPN. I cannot say for certain, however, as we haven't tested that new feature for VPN compatibility.

Similar issue...

I am having an issue after updating when I am either docked or connected to work wifi.  I am still able to access the web but any of our intranet sites I am unable to access.  If I VPN in through Cisco AnyConnect I am able to access everything.  Any ideas?

That issue I'm less sure of, Matt. Was it not behaving that way prior to your update? And if so, what version of Covenant Eyes were you on and what version did you update to?

After talking with the support line, shutting off the filtering took care of the issue but my wife and I want to utilize this feature and don't want to go without it. The other option was to downgrade to the last version and go without the other new features like screen accountability. It would be great to find a resolution for this.

Current version is 8.0.47, not sure what previous version was.

Gotcha...okay, it sounds like it's our DNS settings that are probably causing the conflict. That's good information. I'll make sure that our developers are made aware of this. I'm not able to give a good estimate of how difficult a conflict this would be to resolve-I suspect it will be difficult, sadly to say.
