Gradually over the past week, internet browsing and MS Office got very slow and eventually locks up the computer.  Now computer is barely usable.  I use both Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome.  Did not have any problems until this week.  Running Windows 10 Home version, build # 10240.  Same situation both on my Dell desktop and my new HP laptop.  Any ideas?  Re-install?  Thank you.

I have noticed the same thing on Windows 10 on two completely different computers. Internet browsing slows to a crawl the majority of the time, although I haven't had any problems with MS Office. Started for me in the last week or two as well. Let me know if you figure anything out.

Thanks for posting this issue.  I'm going to start looking into this and see if this problem has been reported by other Covenant Eyes users.  Couple questions....

What version of Covenant Eyes are you using?  Can you think of any changes to your system around the time this started?  Did you recently upgrade to Windows 10?  Also, what anti-virus software do you have?

Thanks!

For me, I am using CE 5.7.0. Been on Windows 10 for about 6 months, have not had internet speed problems until about 1-2 weeks ago. No significant changes to my computer. I did recently enable CE Filtering, but I'm pretty sure I was having slow internet response before that too. I am using the built-in Windows Defender and Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit Free. I have exclusions in Windows Firewall and Defender for the four recommended CE files. Can't add exclusions in Malwarebytes due to free mode, I guess, but my internet speed was fine before 1-2 weeks ago, even with that program installed.

The weird thing is that when I go to speedtest.net, the site responds very slowly (takes anywhere from 10-30 seconds to get the page loaded, but when it gets to the actual testing, I was registering at 80ms latency, 40 Mbps down, and 1 Mbps up. So the connection is just fine, but there's something else weird going on. The same thing happens on YouTube. The page itself loads very slowly, but once the video starts loading, it buffers up the video almost immediately. Almost like downloading lots of different resources clogs the pipe, but loading a video or downloading a file goes very quickly.

Hope that helps at least somewhat. Let me know if you need any other info.

I'm having the same issues. I didn't think it was CE until I read this post. For me it started about a week or two ago as well. Though this is across many systems. I have a three Win7 computers, and a Win10 laptop. All seem to be doing the same thing... I'll look and test this more next weekend. I've got a busy week.

Speedtest.net was so slow to load!! I thought maybe something was bogging down the network, but speedtest.net shows 15 Mbps down and all of our online video watching comes through in HD without issue.

Thanks for details you provided on this issue.  I had a conversation with one of our Windows developers.  He told me that there was a change a few weeks ago that could possibly be related to the issue you're describing.  Did you happen to upgrade to the latest version of Covenant Eyes around the time you started seeing the issue, e.g., about  2 weeks ago?

Oh man, I really don't remember. I typically update right away if the notification pops up saying to update, so it's entirely possible I updated around 2 weeks ago, but I just can't be confident. I don't suppose there is any way to see when the software was updated last? And we're saying that the problem occurs only on version 5.7.0 that I have on both computers having issues?

I'm not sure either. I checked my systems application logs for CE but I didn't see any "install" logs. I only came up with a string of errors on each of these dates 10/23, 10/26, 11/11, 11/12, 11/18, 11/19, 11/28, 12/1. Could just be when I shut down the computer, I don't do that every day.

I too have version 5.7.0 running on this system with Windows 7 64bit and am using Chrome as my browser.

Good thought mentioning the browser, Jesse. I also use Chrome but also tried using Firefox when the slowdown occurred, but it experienced the same problem, so it doesn't seem related to a certain browser.

We're still investigating, but if this potential issue mentioned by the developer is confirmed it would only apply to versions 5.7.6 and newer.  If your running 5.7.5 or older, it wouldn't apply to you.

John, go to the Covenant Eyes icon in your toolbar, right-click on it, and select "About Covenant Eyes".  It won't tell you when you last upgraded, but it will show the current version.

I upgraded to 5.7.14 on my main PC by downloading it directly from the website, CE wasn't detecting an update was available. Things are running much better for me now. I'll test this update on my laptop too.

I went ahead and upgraded as well, but personally am experiencing the same laggy internet browsing as before. I did some typical tasks in the browser before upgrading, and it was laggy, then performed them again after upgrading, and it was laggy the same, sadly.

That's odd John. I did the upgrade manually on my laptop last night as well. I went from 45 seconds to load speedtest.net to 3 seconds. So 5.7.14 has been an extreme improvement for me.

However, I did the same on my home desktop last night too, and it saw no improvements. Yet it was never that slow to begin with. It had a much older version than the other two.

Nice, glad to hear it's fixed one at least one of your devices! I have used my desktop all day today, and the laggy browsing has continued, sadly. Very strange. I even ran PingPlotter for about an hour, and the latency was averaging around 50-60ms to two different sites. So it still does not seem to be an issue with my internet connection, unless I am missing something.

I had some time to do some further testing, including getting info from more computers on my network. After including another Windows 10 laptop without CE, the internet still had issues, so it appears that probably most of my problem lies in one of my network devices. This is strange because I was experiencing the same problem at work on a completely different ISP and everything, but it must have been unrelated.

I just installed CE on my computer and my phone it has a huge slowdown on the internet on the PC but not even noticeable on my phone. Some pages time out after a while some don't load at all even some of CE webpages don't load. PC is running windows 10. At first I thought it was my Anti-Virus but i completely uninstalled it and it still ran slow so i uninstalled CE and it runs fine. So I definitely think it's a windows 10 and CE incompatibility thing. I'll check in later hopefully you find a fix soon till then i'll have to uninstall it.

Hi Jesse,
Usually when a person sees a noticeable slow down upon installing Covenant Eyes, it is either an issue with software interfering with our filter, such as parental controls or another filtering software, OR there is some form of malware on the computer. Since malware tends to occupy the same space on the computer as Covenant Eyes, a lot of users don't notice it until they load our software.  If you are not a filter user (or if you are but are not running parental controls or another filtering software), I would advise that you uninstall Covenant Eyes and run a malware cleaner, and then reinstall our software and see if there is a noticeable difference in speed. If that doesn't resolve the issue, our customer support can be reached at 877-479-1119 M-F 8AM - midnight EST and 10AM-6PM on Saturdays.
