Persistant "CE Filter Blocked: ..." message bubble, though I'm not on explicit/mature sites...

The past few nights, I've tried doing some writing with Microsoft Word, and I realized that I keep getting little messages in a bubble from the "eye" icon on the bottom-right of my taskbar. It only happens when I have the internet up, of course, but these are my usual tabs: Pandora.com, Thesaurus.com, and my @live email account. Even when I'm not actively clicking on links or using the browser (Google Chrome), I get these little messages every 5-10 minutes. It's terribly annoying, particularly when I'm trying to focus on a project. I downloaded the new beta version of CE and restarted the PC, but the problem persists. It's done it twice since I began typing this message, and all I've done is type. And when I try to click on the message bubble, it immediately disappears... Any ideas?

Hey Sam.

Sorry to hear about the pop ups, they sound frustrating.

I actually just spoke about your case with our lead QA guy. Turns out we are seeing a small number of our members report similar issues. The network guys are working on it, as it seems to be connected to some connection quirks.

Hang tight, I do not think it will be too long before they are able to nail down a fix. (They are pretty smart guys)

I ran a trace route from here in Dallas to one of CE's DNS,  network1.cvnt.net.  It appears CE's ISP is Abovenet Communications in Owosso MI. The DNS just before their ISP Is Daystarr Communications, also in Owosso, with the hostname covenanteyes-crnn.customer.michonline.net.  I then ran a speed test to Daystarr Communications and I was surprised with the results.

My local download speed from Dallas is 30.03 Mbs.
My download speed from Owasso, MI is 2.03, 1.47, 1.11 Mbs.

My loacal upload speed to Dallas is 2.13 Mbs.
My upload speed to Owasso, MI is  1.68, 1.76, 1.61 Mbs. (Never seen upload speeds faster than down loads!)

My latency with Dallas is 30 ms.
My latency with Owasso, MI is 190, 185, 213 ms.

For comparison I ran the same tests with against University of Michigan’s server in nearby Flint Mi.

Download speed from Flint, MI is 17.50, 17.13, 19.50 Mbs.
Upload speed to Flint, MI is 2.16, 2.15, 2.16 Mbs.
Latency with Flint, MI is 63, 49, 60 ms.

CE name server seems to be running real slow.

Just a thought.

Interesting results Tiapa,

Thanks for taking the time to post them. I will forward this post on to our network techs.

2 quick thoughts

1: It is interesting to me that your device was pinging Owosso, as we have a server setup much closer to you. Granted, our network configuration is not my area of expertise, but It still seems odd that you were being routed all the way out here...

2. Let us know if you continue to experience trouble. Our server ninjas found and fixed the root cause of the issue sometime later yesterday afternoon. I suspect that it may take a little while yet for all the silliness to be gone but it certainly should be headed that way.

Update from the server team:

"Although some services like the member center are tied to Owosso, all the client communications operate through a different set of IPs.  Customers can find out what Datacenter they are accessing by visiting http://dev.cvnt.net/  (functional, but not pretty...)"

Thanks John.  I just figured I'd test the source in Owasso.  I used  http://dev.cvnt.net/  but all it says is Dallas (me being in Texas).  I have been unable to figure out the IP for your Dallas server.  I sat here for an hour running TCPview and looking up every IP CovenantEyes reached out to.  A couple were in Owasso but the bulk were in California.

I understand all is working now.  I reran the speed test on Owasso and today it is an acceptable 18 Mbs Down and 2.1 Mbs up.

CE doesn't have any servers in California.  Besides for Owosso, CE servers are also located in Seattle, Dallas, New York, and Atlanta.  geo lookup services will not give accurate results as the same IPs used by CE are in multiple locations, including a separate dev.cvnt.net in each location, and each location has several dozen servers...
