Open DNS

Recently upgraded to latest version of CE. Now it replaces my DNS settings to the one CE uses (127.0.0.2). I was using Open DNS because I like the filtering it offers for my kids. If I try to change the DNS settings however to ANYTHING else, CE overrides it and replaces it with the CE DNS server address! I still want to use Open DNS AND keep CE! 

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Hey Eric,

Thanks for bringing up your concern here. I apologize for the confusion regarding this new feature. There has been a slight misunderstanding as to how our DNS change works and I have some updated information for you. Essentially, Covenant Eyes sets the DNS to 127.0.0.2 to provide better monitoring for certain pages but reverts back to your automatic or manually set DNS for everything else.

You can confirm this by right clicking the Covenant Eyes Tray Icon (lower right hand corner, near your clock) and then clicking the Show Dashboard option. This will open a browser window with a few options, one of which will be Managed DNS Settings.

This page basically explains what I said in the first paragraph. Additionally, if you would like to test this, you can change your DNS to something else, though it wont reflect in the IPV4 properties, it will change in the Managed DNS Settings page under the Covenant Eyes dashboard.

I had the same question as Eric, so thank you for answering that.
Can you say which "certain pages" (or domains?) that Covenant Eyes uses its own DNS to monitor? 

This may be a separate post/question elsewhere, but I wondered if CE monitors/filters Google.com that way?  At the moment on my Windows PC, I can't access http://www.google.com or the https:// version either. Is CE filtering or blocking that?  I'm guessing not, because I don't have that issue on my Mac, but I had to ask.

Hello Kevin,
The domains that we are looking for are google related. Our intent with this DNS-type service is not to block google.com but to have more clarity on reports in regard to google.com.

Could you confirm what your DNS settings are under the Covenant Eyes dash board? See my reply above for instructions how. 

If everything looks normal, we may need to collect some diagnostic information to better determine where the issue is.

I thought I'd offer a bit of clarity here myself.

Without getting too technical here, you have a bit of a misunderstanding that the 127.0.0.2 address actually points to a CE DNS server. It does not. 127.0.0.X addresses are used for looping back internet requests to an application or service that actually runs on YOUR computer. Hence, why 127.0.0.1 is called the local loop-back address.

What it CE essentially doing is, instead of sending these DNS requests out from your computer to "the internet," the request is actually routed to CE, and that application can either act on that request (like flagging it or dropping it,) or simply forward request along to the DNS service you had originally set. This is often times called "proxying."

Hi I have a problem where I just started working at a firm which uses an https gmail account for mail etc through an internal system, it seems that CE is stopping me from accessing these and related pages. Any ideas as I desperately need to use the mail system?

I get the same message every time I connect to VPN, so I would like to suggest that we be given an option of "don't show this again."

Forwarded on to our UX guy for Windows. Seems reasonable enough to fix. No promises about timeline.
