IRC clients, mIRC

Can Covenant Eyes block IRC clients (such as mIRC) from being used on a computer? Most IRC software runs independently from the Internet browser. Therefore there activity isn't tracked.  When the CE account is "Panicked" it blocks the software from communicating out. But if CE isn't "panicked" the software can still work, unfiltered.

Is there a setting or way to get CE to block such IRC software?  If not then may I make a suggestion to allow that.

First, let me apologize for the very slow response time. That was terrible and I hope we don't do that again.

Secondly, let me applaud you for looking at additional angles for online safety.

As you mentioned, IRCs are generally independent of browsers. Since CE limits itself to monitoring and filtering browser activity, the software is not able to provide the same protection when it comes to IRCs. However, testing is being done on technology that would change that. If/when that becomes available, we'll get the word out.

In the meantime, you could look at a router-based solution. Some routers and/or ISPs offer the option of filtering at those levels. To learn more, visit or You can also visit the websites of your ISP and the manufacturer of your router.

Thanks for reaching out,
