iOS CE VPN disconnects for short periods of time

On my iPhone, I go through short periods of time, maybe a minute or so, where I lose network connectivity. I think I'm on Wi-Fi every time. Basically, in my status bar, I lose the Wi-Fi icon and the VPN icon, and I just see the LTE up in the status bar. During this time I have no connectivity. If I go to settings, I see "VPN Connecting..." This has happened on my home Wi-Fi and work Wi-Fi. I haven't noticed it on a mobile data connection. This happens probably 4 or 5 times a day. It sometimes happens when I'm on the browser, and sometimes not.

I'm running iOS 13.2.3 on iPhone 7, with latest version of CE, but I think this has happened even before iOS 13.

I also notice this. Particularly more with my ipad.  IOS CE becomes virtually unusable at times with my ipad.

Chance and Tom,

Thank you for bringing this up. It sounds like the VPN is possibly disconnecting when the phone switches from WiFi to data.

There is one setting that I'd like you both to check. It's called "Connect on demand." This can be accessed by:
  • Going to the Settings app
  • Tapping General
  • Tap VPN
  • Then tap on the "i" next to Covenant Eyes
  • "Connect on Demand" should be at the bottom, make sure that is turned on.
With that setting turned on, if you open any app while the VPN is disconnected, it should automatically reconnect.

If "Connect on Demand" is already enabled, there might be something else going on. I would suggest calling Customer Support (877.479.1119) and we can help troubleshoot this.

Thank you,

Andy

So in conversations with email support, I think we narrowed it down to the proxy config I have from Weblock to block ads. Whenever I have an automatic proxy config with a url provided by weblock, I get this behavior.

I wanted to follow up on this. This is probably beyond the scope of CE support, but do you all have any suggestions on blocking ads with Covenant Eyes on iPhone? I don't know if the issue is with using automatic proxy configuration or the combination of that with a VPN configuration. Do you have any idea on why maybe the two things wouldn't work well together?

Chance,

Thank you for reaching out to us! Unfortunately, there really aren’t any ad blockers that work with Covenant Eyes. There are a few reasons why. Most ad blockers come in the form of Safari extensions on iOS devices, so they would not work within our app. A lot of them also use a similar method to block ads in the way that we apply our filter, they either use their own VPN or set up something to create a local DNS proxy. Both of those would conflict with Covenant Eyes®.

If your seeing an influx of ads or pop ups, I suggest clearing out the history and app data on your apps/browsers. You can even clear that out in the Covenant Eyes® app.

Best regards,

Andy

Thanks Andy. Has there been thought put into adding an adblocker to either the VPN setup or the browser itself?

Chance,

I have not heard anything on my end of an ad blocker being worked on, but that is a great suggestion! I can send this information to our developers to see if that is something we can implement in the future.
