As my title asks, does the use of Covenant Eyes (in this case, specifically on Windows 8.1, but potentially on other platforms as well) increase the amount of data I consume through my Internet provider?

I don't know if we have this kind of information officially recorded anywhere (at least not in Customer Service, my department) but a quick test on my own machine (Windows 8.1 x64, running Covenant Eyes 5.4.3) shows that after roughly 4 hours of up time, all Covenant Eyes processes have used a little over 8KB.

This kind of usage should be expected from all platforms, though, we have seen some anomalies with our Android Beta that we are trying to nail down.

Hi Brandon,

Are you using the same version of Windows (8.1), that Aylarja mentioned in his original post?  Let me know.  I'll see what I can do to help.

Thanks,

Shawn Pillsbury

Have you found anything with the Android platform and data usage?  My son has a data limit per month and Covenant Eyes seems to be the factor that is pushing close to his family allotment.  Any thoughts?

Hello Allen

I am so sorry for the delayed response and I appreciate your patience. The truth is that Covenant Eyes is going to use some data, but it should not be an excessive amount. I polled some of our other CSRs who have Covenant Eyes installed on their Android phones and their data usage ranged from 12 megabytes (MBs) to 21 MBs. That range is not abnormal for the Covenant Eyes app especially since 1 gigabyte of data is usually around 1000 MBs.

To see how much data each app is using, you can go into the settings on your son's Android device and the find data usage or data manager option. It should then list each app installed on the device and how many Kilobytes (KBs) /MBs each is using for your data cycle.

If you find that Covenant Eyes is using an abnormally high amount of MBs I would suggest uninstalling the Covenant Eyes application, restarting the Android device, reinstall the Covenant Eyes app and continue to monitor the app usage for Covenant Eyes.

If the high data usage continues on your son's phone, even after you've completed the above steps, please give Customer Service a call at 877.479.1119 so we can further troubleshoot with you.

Best regards,
Annelise
