Okay Folks,

I wanted to try something a little different here, so we are going on an experiment. We have an Android release coming in the next couple weeks (assuming all goes well) and I wanted to take a moment to cover the important details.

What this is: A place to discuss the upcoming features of this next Android release and to answer any questions about what it means

What this isn't: A place to bring in a big 5 gallon jug of hate-O-rade against any features that have not been included in this release.

Assuming this experiment goes well, I plan to try and preview all releases for all platforms eventually here.

Without any further delays then...

Covenant Eyes for Android 2.0.2

  • Covenant Eyes now leverages Accessibility Services to improve reporting.
Something we have wanted to do for a long time. Essentially this means we can now cover a wide variety of applications, and their various (cough) private functionalities.

  • Added Monitoring for the following Applications: Chrome, Home Screen Google Search, "Browser", "Internet", Facebook, (reports visited profiles) and Youtube.
Essentially now you can use any of these applications (regardless of which is the default on your device) and Covenant Eyes is going to be able to report on them. Videos from the YouTube app will all currently report as youtube.com but the actual title of the video will be in the detailed browsing log. This list is not final, and more apps will be added to be monitored over time.

  • We offer some monitoring on the Twitter App
There are some compatibility issues with older versions of Android and the Twitter app. If you are on Android 4.3 and higher we also added monitoring for Twitter.

  • This update now sets the minimum Android version requirement to 4.0
People on versions lower than 4.0 will still be able to use the current version of the app. We were unable to reduce the system requirements any lower than 4.0. Here is a neat link that shows what Android version is which http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_(operating_system)

We would love to hear your feedback on both the app, and release previews in general.

Many props to the Android team for all the hard work they have done.

Did I miss something or is my playstore just not updating my covenant eyes? Why is it still only 1.8.2? Also why is there already 3.0.1 beta?

Wow this is really Impressive and a definite major improvement to the CE service. As long as it works as stated.

Just to be clear, when you say CE will monitor apps "private functionalities" does this mean that incognito mode in chrome and similar modes in the other CE-supported browsers are covered/monitored?

Also, upon release it would be great to include a fully comprehensive list of the apps that are monitored in that release at the time of the release.

Unfortunately, as a user with multiple devices of different operating systems (I.e. Android, iOS, OS X and Windows.) it is sometimes difficult to keep track of what is monitored on which platforms by CE because the updates/versions of CE for these different platforms are being developed individually or on separate time lines. Which makes it difficult to keep track like I've said. Understandably iOS has many more restrictions in place but these features would also be amazing if they could be included on an iOS platform.

That's said, major kudos to the android team - this is really the best progress I've seen on any accountability type software to combat the array of potential access points or "loopholes" when it comes to browsing the net using various apps and services.

Hey Bradley,

You are correct about incognito mode, we will successfully cover it once this new build is deployed.

I know it can be tough to keep up with which device does what sometimes, but we continue to strive towards unifying the way that our platforms work to help reduce that burden.

iOS for example is going to continue to be a sticky stop until Apple relinquishes the keys to deep system access, whereas Android is able to develop without arbitrary approval from on high.

Thanks for taking the time to respond to us here, and let us know if you have any other questions

Hi John,

I'd just like to say thanks a lot for the update here.  Also, I'd like to put in a vote of support to cover incognito mode in Android.  That will be fantastic.

Looking forward to the update and thanks!

Hey Time,

Thanks for posting. The app is going through its finally stages of vetting (basically our QA guy is hitting it with every trick in the book) and then hopefully we should be releasing soon.  We are super excited about this release

What about when starting your phone in "SAFE" mode? That seems like a pretty significant hole?

Looks like there is a issue with the reporting. When I first installed the beta, the times for the visited sites were incorrect and it also displayed entries from different days along with the right ones. Now for the last two days, it isn't logging any web activity, only app usage.

What specific type of phone are you using?

We have fixed numerous bugs since we posted this beta. I will see if we have a new one to post early tomorrow when our Dev is available

Ok. It is also the stock browser, not just Chrome. I don't know if it's just the way my phone is set, or a issue with the build. It's logging app usage, so I know it's setup correctly.

So far so good, all the missing days are now accounted for. So it has been logging everything, it just isn't showing in the report. I'll let you know if I have any other issues.

I updated my husband's and the only things showing up are Twitter and Facebook... after reviewing history to see what was up it looks like it's not logging internet explorer.

Hey Ashley,

Sorry to hear about any trouble you are having. Typically it is impossible to have Internet Explorer on an Android device (they are made through Google instead of Windows) so it is unlikely that anything from Internet Explorer would be there.

If he is using it on his Android he would typically have Google Chrome, or Browser, or Internet as his main way of viewing the internet. Covenant Eyes should be able to monitor any of those.

Do you know what specific kind of phone he has? That will help us narrow down any potential issues he may be having

I'm now having those same issues again. I think it might have to do with the accessibility service it nite uses. I've noticed that the during the times it isn't working, the display that pops up showing the website via accessibility service isn't there. It is currently logging my Google searches from the main screen (does show the display with the address), but not web activity. If I can help clarify let me know.

Interesting. We dropped another beta update today (as you can tell we are trying to work out the quirks). Let's try upgrading to that and see how that goes. Hang tight, we are getting closer

I feel like I must be doing something wrong. It's only logging facebook and Twitter but, when I go to look at them there is no detailed log. It's also not logging websites. Am I updating it wrong?
