Covenant Eyes interfering with important applications (CrashPlan, UniFi Controller)

I have been using CrashPlan for a long time, and recently (after recent CrashPlan updates and CE updates) I have no longer been able to run the CrashPlan desktop application.  After going through a round of troubleshooting with CrashPlan technical support, they asked me to disable CovenantEyes and try again.  With CE uninstalled, CrashPlan worked just fine.

Similarly, I bought a Ubiquiti UniFi UAP device (an access point) and after setting it up, tried to run the controller software ("UniFi Controller").  This application also will fail to operate correctly while CE is running.

CE has always been good about not interfering with other apps, at least for me.  Did something change?  Is there anything that can be done?

Hi Aggieben,

My apologies for the issues you have been experiencing with Covenant Eyes recently.  I'll do my best to help resolve these issues.

To get started, I have a few questions.  What version of software are you running for Covenant Eyes?  Windows OS?  CrashPlan?  Ubiquiti UniFi?  Did you upgrade to a newer version of Covenant Eyes recently?

You can contact me directly at shawn.pillsbury@covenanteyes.com

Thanks,

If we need to discuss confidential information offline, then that's fine.  Otherwise, I'd like to keep this in the forums so as to benefit anyone else who may experience similar problems.

My version of CE: 6.0.16
Windows: 10.0.10586 Build 10586 (x64)
CrashPlan: 4.7.0.317
UniFi Controller: 5.0.7

I don't remember consciously upgrading CE recently (i.e., in the last few weeks), but I usually upgrade whenever there is a new version available.  However, I must have upgraded since 5/11, since that's when the current version was released.  I have been experiencing issues with CrashPlan for many weeks - the timelines definitely seem to overlap.  UniFi Controller is something I have only recently installed.

Thanks for the update Aggieben,  I'll be meeting with the development team later today.  I'll keep you posted on our progress.

Shawn, I had a very similar conversation with our IT consultant late last week related to interference that they believe is occurring between CE and the microphone on my Plantronics P540-M voice over IP phone.  I can receive calls, but the microphone gets muted automatically, and the IT staff ran some tests to isolate CE and it solved the problem.  They too suggested that I uninstall CE, which I'd prefer not to do.  My situation is similar to above, except I'm running Windows 9.

Hi Kent,

I'm sorry you've been experiencing issues with Covenant Eyes.  Typically, when users report compatibility issues between Covenant Eyes and other software we get a copy of the software and try to recreate the issue as part of the investigation.  Let me talk with one of our developers to see how best to investigate this issue.

I'll let you know what I find.

Thanks,

Hi Abbieben,

I spoke with the developer yesterday.  He was able to re-create the issue with CrashPlan running Covenant Eyes v6.0.16.  The good news is the issue seems to be resolved in a beta version of Covenant Eyes.  In this beta, we addressed some compatibility issues with other software packages.  We believe the changes may have fixed this issue with CrashPlan.

The developer is still investigating the issue with Unifi Controller software.

If you're interested, I can give you a copy of the beta.  It has been tested internally and we are currently making it available to users on a limited basis.  Email at shawn.pillsbury@covenanteyes.com if you would like the download link.

Thanks,
