Covenant Eyes Android VPN Preventing Hotspot and Tethering From Working

I have a Galaxy Note 9 through AT&T and after the updated to Samsung's One UI update the hotspot and tethering stopped working. They would give and error of "Temporary network issue." I pretty sure that it is Covenant Eyes causing the issue because if I turn of the vpn and quickly enable the hotspot before the vpn is re enabled it seems to work. I also uninstalled Covenant Eyes and it worked fine. I reinstalled it with the most recent update and it stopped working again. I can hack it to get it work by disabling the vpn but I use it all the time so it is kind of annoying. Thanks!

Hello Jonathan Nielsen,
Thank you for posting! Here are some things to consider:
  1. Covenant Eyes cannot guarantee the functionality of our software if your device is running a beta operating system, like One UI.
  2. We developed a new form of accountability, which we call Screen Accountability. Screen Accountability captures screenshots of your device to hold you accountable.
  3. Screen Accountability does not utilize a VPN for users that do not want filtering. So if you run Screen Accountability on your device, you shouldn't have trouble using your mobile hotspot.
To learn more about Screen Accountability, you can visit https://www.covenanteyes.com/screen-accountability-coming-soon/ for more information.

Or call our Customer Support Team at 877-479-1119 (US) or 989-720-8000 (IN).

I hope this helps!

I have the exact same phone and carrier, with the same error message.

Did this get fixed?

I never found a fix. An easy workaround I found is to disconnect the VPN by tapping it in the pull down menu and then quickly turning the hotspot on before CE re-enables it.

Thanks for replying. That's exactly what I was doing, but it didn't help for using Wi-Fi, it only helped for turning on the phone's Hotspot. I took off the "blocking" option (the filtering), and continue to use screen accountability. Now it's not using a VPN. Everything works perfectly now.
