I don't understand why this beta version of CE is eating up my 4G data. Yesterday alone, the app burned almost 400 MB when I was out and about. I didn't stream any videos/music and I didn't download any files. I can't imagine at all what from my activity would have added up to that much data. Is there a setting I missed? I have a metered plan and this is going to use up all my data way before the month is up. And this has only happened since installing this beta version.

Phone: Note 3 (SAMSUNG-SM-N900A)
Carrier: AT&T
Android: 5.0
CE Version: 2.9.9.23

They have found that all data is logged through ce, so it looks like it is using a lot of data, but it actually isn't any more than nornal

I read that, but there's no way I used that much data yesterday with the apps I used. Unless Lollipop is eating it up. Is there a way to see the data usage in CE reports. I have to get this figured out before I cap my data in a week or two.

CE should not be eating any substantial amount of data. It DOES totally look like we are though. Unfortunately there is no current way to break down data usage when using the beta, because all data ends up going through our app.

I will pass this along to our team and see if we know anything about the Note 3 that I am currently missing.

In the meantime I would suggest watching carefully. We should have a newer version of the beta out in the next couple weeks with an entirely new engine under the hood. There is everychance that the new version will solve some of the current bugs. (data display will still all look like CE however.)

Thanks for taking the time to post

Today, I realized I had missed a software update from Verizon for my Galaxy S5 (Fortunately my wife told me about it). I tried to download but was unable to, and I think the CE beta was the reason why (I never had a problem with the "normal" app). I had to restart my phone in safe mode and then download the update, and then it installed just fine. Is this a bug anyone else has reported?

Nope, thanks for the new report though.

I will add this to the bug log.

I actually suspect our next version of the beta will have this fixed just as a byproduct of the background work we have been doing.

Stay tuned.

I recently got the Galaxy S6 and am running Android 5.0.2. Is the beta pretty stable for the newer Android version yet? This phone is blazing fast and everything runs so smooth, I just wanted a heads up before throwing the beta on it. Or maybe wait until the next version?

Hey Adam.

The current version is fairly stable for most people. Slowness is still an issue that will not be significantly improved until the next version (with the new engine) but I do not anticipate and significant problems if you instal the current beta.

John,

So my phone an ATT S5 updated to lolipop 5.0 on Wednesday and I uninstalled CE before that update and reinstalled yesterday after it was finished.  Anyways, from about 11 or 12 yesterday until I got home around 9:30 CE used 33% of my total battery.  Why is CE such a battery hog in 5.0?  Is this a known issue?  I never had issues with excessive battery drain in 4.4.4 or 4.4.2.

Matthew,

Generally speaking we should be hogging about the same amount of battery that we used to. As far as I know that should hold true even in Android 5.

That being said, we have noticed some oddities happening specifically with Android 5 & the GS 5. Our team is still buried in rebuilding the reporting engine and unfortunately has not had much time for bug fixes recently. The good news is that we are making great progress on the update, and should be able to return to fixing bugs at a much faster rate in the near (ish) future.

For the meantime I have made note of this, and will let you know as soon as I have more information

Thanks

Hello!  Do you have any projection for when Covenant Eyes 3.0 will be stable and secure enough to trust for accountability purposes?  My phone is ready to upgrade to Lollipop, but I don't want to upgrade until I have Covenant Eyes to go along with it.  Any info you could provide will be helpful.  Thanks so much!

I have been running  CE Beta 2.9.9.27 on Lollipop (Galaxy S5) for a while now. A couple of issues to report:
1) Wellsfargo App no longer will submit check images for mobile deposit. I'm guessing maybe the VPN blocks some connection in the submission process. My wife has the same version of the app on her phone and is has no problems.
2) Random crashes new with the most recent beta as well as random lock ups.

Heard a new version is in the works. Maybe that will take care of it, but I thought I should share just in case.

Daniel - adding a new user/guest account on lollipop can be blocked by locking down settings. It's a hassle not having access to settings, but such is attempting to live a pure life in this day. I have mine setup this way, and I am still able to access networks and such through the GUI quick access drop down on the top of the screen.

I would hope that there is some way CE can lock down specific parts of the settings, but for security reasons Andriod isn't setup that way.

Hey Jesse,

What setting specifically are you locking down? We may be able to do the same thing programmatically. (no promises)

Thanks for helping each other out. We are still working on this, and each day new progress is coming along.

Also, we are working out some oddities with app communication. Our intention is to make sure the new version works with as many different apps & protocols as is possible.

Hey John,

I have my complete "settings" gear/app locked down. This was recommended somewhere else on the forums to disable the ability to re-enable disabled apps (google search and voice search which can't be disabled by the CE app currently) and also disabled the ability to change system settings, such as creating a new user account as Daniel brought up here.

So, that would be the intentional settings specifically locked down, user accounts and app management. I would have to ask my accountability partner is she found other "holes" in the settings as she did a complete inspection of the new Lollipop OS on my Galaxy S5 and all my apps too.

One I am the most sad to be without is the Logos' Bible app. Sadly they have an in app browser. With my conviction to "remove the hot coals" before I get burned (Prov. 6:26-28), that app is a hot coal that must go, I'm not willing to walk on it. Nothing CE can do about it, I'm just whining.

Jesse,
Wish locking down settings would work for this issue but on my lg g3 d855 there is a button when u slide down from top that allows u to open user/guest without even going through settings just checked and blocking settings doesn't help, at least on my phone running lollipop 5.0. Still thanks and hope we can find solution...

I took a look at the manual for your LG, you should be able to change what keys are in the "Quick Toggle Area" on the phone.
If you first remove the user/guest key from the quick toggle area, then go into CE and lock down settings it should keep you from being able to access the area where you add and remove keys to the quick toggle area again.

Thanks so much for looking into it, the problem is already tried that and this is a separate thing from quick toggle doesn't give u option to remove.new function from lollipop wouldn't be in manual. I'm not sure u understand me without looking at phone but pretty sure no setting helps with removal from pulldown. Thanks

Yeah, I gotcha. Every system is different so I wasn't sure. Drop downs are almost impossible to deal with. I've got a major drop down work around issue for CE on the Galaxy too.

Honestly, there is a fix, it just require rooting your phone and that's way to risky in my opinion. With a rooted phone though, many of the different GUI features can be "disabled" or destroyed. It's to bad there isn't a better work around... UNLESS CE does create some way to disable different features within the system settings. As John said above:

Hey Jesse. I have Logos on my phone as well.  I realized it had a web browser installed on it and i thought i would have to get rid of it also, but I did some digging and found an app called droidwall.  It is only for rooted phones i think, but it essentially enables apps to be used, but to not allow them to access the internet in any way.  So i rooted my phone and installed it, then i downloaded my top 30 resources on logos to my phone so i could have access to them offline. then i locked internet access to logos through the droidwall app and it works great!

Ah! i didn't realize you were not a fan of rooting phones! It scared me too. But I got to the point where i need a level of functionality AND accountability that i could not achieve without rooting my device.  I locked down my phone before i ever installed covenant eyes through programs like Droidwall and AppLock and System App Mover.  Droidwall is super useful for apps like audible, kindle, and Logos. which all have built in browsers.  I originally rooted my phone so i could turn my AppLock into a system app that would run in "safemode"  While this is no longer necessary, i have found a wealth of worthwhile funcionality including everything from removing annoying adds with Greenify to Automating my phone with Tasker.

Hey Brandon, I am getting closer to being on board with your setup... but I'm so freaked about bricking my phone. What phone did you root? What program did you use to do it? I have a Samsung Galaxy S5 with Lollipop.

Also, once you root, do you loose the ability to upgrade the OS in the future?

I am seeing more and more worth in being able to use apps like Logos and Kindle and while remaining accountable. Up to this point, I just go without the apps vs. going without the accountability.

Would this be possible on my Samsung Galaxy Tablet I have. It's a Tab Pro 8.4 if that helps.

I rooted a Samsung galaxy S4, a galaxy S3, A galaxy tab S and most recently a Nexus 6.  I have used a few different processes to do so but for Samsung i used a wonderful little program made by Samsung called ODIN.  Youtube videos using my specific device have always been my best friend when rooting because they offer simple step by step tutorials.  Keep in mind that Samsung makes different models of phones for each network provider (i.e. sprint, Verizon, t-mobile, etc...)  Make sure you are using the correct files for your specific phone model.

Years ago i hard bricked a Samsung instinct trying to root it.  nowadays it is much more difficult to brick your phone. you are more likely to "soft-brick" your phone (which is definitely fixable).

Upgrading your software on a rooted phone can definitely be an issue.  there are some apps you can install that try and keep your rooted privileges through the update but they are at best unreliable.  Generally if you flash a rooted device with android 5.0, you will not be able to update your device via the over-the-air update that Samsung sends out.  the best way to upgrade the software is to flash a rooted version of the updated software, in the same way you originally flashed root.

If you have any additional questions let me know and ill try to answer them!

I've been running 2.9.9.27 on Lollipop on a Moto G.
The "Whoops: VPN needs to be active" screen seems to be popping up with increasing frequency. I don't know if "Clean Master" is interfering with it and trying to shut it down, and that's why it keeps popping up. I'm about to uninstall Clean Master to see if that improves things.
Secondly, occasionally when CE is bringing up the "Whoops: VPN" screen, it brings up a blank screen. Clicking to scroll through open apps and then clicking on the screen again seems to bring it up and then clicking runs the VPN.

Will see what removing Clean Master does.

Thanks for your work!

Hey Duncan,

It is likely that the engine re-write that we are in the midst of will solve the majority of those type of problems. We will post the newest beta for everyone to see as soon as it is ready.

I know that the CE app is reported as using all other apps data, but it seems that CE itself is also burning a tremendous amount of data itself. In fact it seems to have used several GBs of data on days when the phone wasn't being used at all!

The phone reported the following regarding the data consumption of the Android Beta app:

24 January - 23 February 1.23 G.B

24 February - 23 March 2.53 G.B

24 March - 22 April 6.634 G.B

8 April - 10 April (on days of zero phone use!) 3.76 G.B

11 April - 22 April 1.53 G.B.

(The bill last week was over £100 instead of the usual £35-£40!)

__

A CSR at CE indicated that it is a real issue and the app should be uninstalled.

Should we uninstall so we don't get hit with astronomical data charges? Please advise.

I have an HTC One M7 GPE with Lollipop, and for me the app is draining the battery. Is there any known fix for this? It started as soon as I installed the newest beta version, 2.9.9.27 . I have had my phone off battery for about 10 hours and its reporting 24% battery usage, and my battery is abnormally low.

I should also mention, my phone is rooted and I use Xposed Framework modules on there for different ROM tweeks. So if there are any solutions that can be implemented for rooted phones, that would work for me.

I believe CE3 is interfering with my Wi-Fi calling on T-Mobile. I depend on this at my house (no service), and since installing CE3 beta I cannot send/receive info over a Wi-Fi call. The call will connect, but there is no sound either way. I would love to help in any way to get this unblocked!

I think the same issue may be interfering with my ability to use my phone as a WiFi hot spot.  With mine the issue has to do with the VPN.  When I turn off my VPN. i can turn on my WiFi hot spot and it works great! (granted i cant use internet on my phone when the VPN is disabled because CE is constantly telling me to turn the VPN back on) The moment I turn the VPN back on, the devices connected to my hotspot get no internet.  Not really a problem, just thought it might be relevant!  Keep up the good work! y'all are a blessing, and you have made a pretty awesome app!

No internet or network feature works for me now that I updated to beta which the play store prompted me to do. Running Samsung galaxy S5 (Version 5.0)  Anyone know what I should do?

Side Note: I know you all are trying hard to get this figured out but... You should give people testing your beta a discount or something because this version is not working for me. I am not trying to be rude or anything I am just a bit upset I am having to pay for a nonworking beta.

I have a galaxy s4 on AT&T with lolipop and ever since I installed the beta version I too have lost any data connectivity. unless I'm on a wifi connection I cannot retrieve email or surf the web. had I known this was the upgrade path to play store was going to make it take I never would have upgraded. I have to agree with the earlier comment that it does seem a bit ridiculous to pay for a non-working beta. I appreciate all that you all do for internet accountability but this update has made me rethink my future with covenant eyes. also I've noticed that in the last 6 days since the update I have burned through 400 meg of data even though I am connected to a wifi connection. that's that's a little less than half of what I pay for a month. I don't understand if I'm on a wifi connection why the app is burning through all this data? the VPN connection is brutally slow as well.

Thad and Curt,
I have the same setup, S5 with Lollipop and it works for me to go between Wifi and Mobile Data. Keep in mind, when you leave one network and go to another, either from one wifi to another or mobile to wifi or back, that your VPN to CovenantEyes gets busted because your no longer on the same connection.
To resolve this, before you connect to your new connection
  1. Swipe down from the top of your screen
  2. Click on the "VPN is activated by Coven..."
  3. Click disconnect
  4. Turn on your wifi or mobile data
  5. When prompted by CE click Active VPN.
This hasn't always been necessary for me, which is odd, because the way VPN's work it should be necessary every-time your connection changes. As an IT guy myself, I'm pretty the only fix CE could offer is the option for you to disable the VPN entirely. Yet, I would disagree with the accountability loop-hole that option would create.

Also, be sure you are using the beta from here:
http://www.covenanteyes.com/droidtest/beta
That's what I have working on my Galaxy S5. Not sure what's on the Google play store currently.
Blessings

Thanks for the advice Jesse!

I did try disconnecting the vpn multiple times and it never worked. I also tried to do a complete unistall and reinstall which that was unsuccessful in fixing the issue.

This issue could be because the network I am connected to is usually weak everywhere for one so anything making that connection weaker could make it fail altogether.

And the problem with the wifi is I work at a University which is constantly switching routers even at my desk and especially whenever going between the labs so having to turn off the vpn everytime I switch routers isn't really an option because I don't know when that is.

The google play store installs an update and then says "you have an incompatible version please follow this link and install the beta" and takes you to your link Jesse, so we should both be using the correct version.

It's tough.  CE is trying to make Android do something the code ninjas at Google don't want the device to do.  Same for Apple.  We are the guinea pigs willing to ride this rebellious wave against these companies.  I personally don't think it's appropriate to ask for a refund.  We all asked to be on the bleeding edge of tech. If you want a stable version delete the beta and head to the Play Store.  There will probably come a day when Covenant Eyes will have to accept that their objective runs in stark contrast with the intent of Google or Apple.  For us younger guys who are tech savvy the current options for Android or IOS don't really work.  School requires apps that have browsers in them and blocks VPN for security reasons.  It really does have to be system wide like the OS X or Win solutions.  I think jailbraking is inevitable.  We are already trying to do what they don't want. :)  We (my peers and I) spend more time on mobile devices than we do the traditional computer.  The relevance gap will widen quickly if they don't figure something out.  Whatever happens I will support CE!  I love their mission independent of the mobile mountain that is in front of them.  Keep it up guys!  We got your back.  Don't be scared of the Jailbrake though.  We are already rebelling against the intent of the software! :)

The only problem with this is there already is a program that works with android, pc, mac, ios, and chromebook called Accountable2you. It also monitors incognito mode and captures the activity on all browsers. Another cool function is it sends text and email alerts for things that are flagged!

I won't say anything negative about A2U here, its not our style to tear down companies who are alongside us in the fight against internet temptation.

What I will say is that our new app uses technology that nobody in the industry is using, and that once we get it polished the limit for what we can report on, and the clarity with which we can report it, will be unmatched.

One thing I will say about A2U, is that they allow you to easily disable their software whenever you want. For people who really need Internet accountability, that can make a huge difference in whether nor not hey succeed at being safe online...

There is a solution! but it requires rooting your phone.  There is an app called system app mover which allows you to take most any app (including covenant eyes) and move it into the system folder.  Safe mode only runs apps in that system folder so essentially you would be tricking the system to run covenant eyes even wile in safe mode.

I was having too much trouble with the buggy VPN issue and Android Lollipop. So I was going to uninstall and go without (I was trying to send a pic of the grandkids to my folks and it wouldn't go unless I deactivated VPN and then wouldn't let me turn off VPN.) I typed my username and password to generate uninstall code. It gave me one and then it said the code was invalid. I had to come to CE site to get code that worked. I will be happy to try the next updated version!

I updated to the Android Beta however I've noticed that when I activate my hotspot my computer also running covenant eyes doesn't get Internet access through my phone. However if I use another phone not running Covenant Eyes it works fine. I'm suspecting it's how the new VPN connection interacts.

I have a HTC One M7.

Aside from that I like the updated version and that it monitors all apps on the phone. Enables the phone to function as normal maximising features but also being protected. Much better than the limitations of Apple.

I'm sure that you guys are already working on this but I have experienced instability when working with data going through Google's servers and until I rebooted I was unable to get my google now search bar to work I will keep you updated if this is an ongoing problem. I have also found that my data connection will drop for no apparent reason which was not a problem that I experienced previously. On a side note my phone may not be representative of all lollipop phones or even all nexus 6s because my phone is tapped. I know this sounds paranoid but I have significant evidence to point to it starting with the fact that every phone I have ever owned has call forwarding active even though it is shut off on the phone and the carrier says my calls are not being forwarded by them.

On a side note I keep getting VPN pop ups as well. Would it be possible to use googles VPN manager since that might play nicer with the other software? I am also having some app instability. It has crashed on me 5 times already today and with it being so invasive (I'm not saying that is a bad thing) it grinds my phone to a halt.

I am also experiencing some significant slowing of WiFi when I am connected which is not a huge deal for me since I don't actually have WiFi at home but I have logged into 3 or 4 WiFi networks at friends houses over the weekend and it is usuable but not great.

Slowness is a for sure side effect of the current beta (more specifically, the programmatic limitations of the Java engine Android runs on) The next beta will have gone through an engine swap, and should be noticeably faster. It probably will not be 100% of your speed, but it will get you most of it.

Thank you for your quick responses. Please forgive me if I am sounding needy or complaining. My intent is to bring issues to your attention as I notice them. Thanks for all you guys do. One thing that I was noticing yesterday but I am not sure if I could say its a pettern yet. The VPN needs to be reactivated most often after my phone has gone to sleep and gets turned back on. This leads me to believe that the VPN is not running while the phone is sleeping.

Hey! Does the beta automatically update or should we manually update it occasionally?

you will have to upgrade manually for now. We have not pushed a new beta in a while yet, so you aren't missing much. We will let everyone know when the newest build is available. (internal testing is looking better, we ran into some pesky bugs that were holding up release)

I've been seeing nothing but complaints about CE and Lollipop for months, so I've been putting off updating from KitKat. Now my phone (Verizon LG G3) is getting increasingly insistent about upgrading, so I have to ask - is there anyone for whom CE isn't broken on Lollipop? I can't do without CE, and I'm more than happy to put up with the VPN crashing or locking up a few times a week (which is what's been happening since January), but I've gotten the impression from the questions here that the problems with Lollipop are effectively disabling the current CE.

I want to echo this sentiment and request that *please* CE release something that at least works somewhat with Lollipop (even if it doesn't have the VPN capabilities). I live outside any service area, so I depend on WiFi calling/texting, but the current CE3.0 kills my WiFi calling/texting so I either have a safe phone that doesn't work, or an unsafe phone that does work.

If you only have wifi than you can use family open dns which filters every inappropriate thing on any computer or device that is connected to your router. (Side note, if you need extra protection you can password protect your router and send the password to your accountability partner for emergencies)

In order to change the dns for your android device (data) you will need to root your phone and can then change your dns. Let me know if you have any questions about changing your dns and I can give more assistance (or you can do a quick google search ;))

Not sure if this has been mentioned here yet but I have found that to tether my phone with my computer I have to log out of the VPN for data to pass through. But then I can't text and such while tethering since the VPN login deal comes up if I try to do anything else. Just a heads up.

Quick question, do you know when we should expect an update in the beta test?

I don't know when, that is why this is still in beta unfortunately. =( We have been hoping to release a new beta (with the new engine) for the past few weeks, but each time we run it through the internal tests we find some nasty little bug that needs to be killed. The good news is that we are making progress, and I have another build yet to test today.

The thing I can tell you for sure is that as soon as we have anything remotely ready for you guys, you will have it.

Thanks for your patience

I have CE 2.9.9.23 and the S6 Edge.  I am unable to send SMS messages with this latest upgrade.

It appears that turning on the VPN for covenant eyes does not allow my phone nexus 5 lollipop to be used as a hotspot. I have to disable the VPN and then it works no problem but once VPN is renabled I face the same issue.

So I learned about this recently, and I was actually surprised to hear that this happens.

After some research, it turns out that is true for all VPN type apps on Android. It is a known cost of using VPN technology. That may well change in the future, but for now it looks like that is not something that we have the power to fix.

Phillips Hue app cannot connect to hub while VPN is active.  This makes controlling lights somewhat laborious.  First world problems.

Hey Kirk,

I suspect that may be something we can fix in the long run. We essentially had to re-write the book on network communication in order to use VPN tech like we are. As a side effect, some protocols aren't working quite right yet. I will add this to the list

Perfect.  It doesn't bother me too much, just two more steps to use the app.  Only adding to the list for you all to review.  We also have two different baby camera apps that we use, iBaby and mydlink Lite that work through the "outside network" function of the app once the camera has been set up, but not on the intranet side when the VPN is active.

@Kirk, holy cow, I also use mydlink Lite and noticed recently that I couldn't get to my camera feed through the app locally, only through remote. I didn't even think about that I had just upgraded to CE beta. Thanks for helping me put two and two together.

@John, yes, if you guys could put it on your list to allow apps through that do camera feeds (like mydlink Lite), that would be wonderful.
