Good News Everyone!

We have just pushed Covenant Eyes for Android Version 1.99.36

This is our first beta release in a long time, and we really appreciate the feedback and support you all have provided while we have been working on it.

Here are the release highlights!

Version 2.99.36
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Updated the TMS (VPN) engine that is driving the app.
  • Expect faster performance & greater stability.
  • This was a whale of a job. Seriously, our dev team created a superior engine from scratch.
Updated the Visual layout of the install process.
  • Expect fewer visual glitches & easier use.
Found and promptly squashed a few common crashes
  • Expect fewer crashes. The ones you do find may look the same, but they are likely new.

Please update to this version and let us know how it works. We are now at a stage where we can start actively troubleshooting & polishing the software, which cannot happen without your help.

Once you have tried the new version please post your results here for us to talk through.

Many thanks again for your patience.

After installing 1.99.36 (about 6 hrs ago) I had a few hang ups with my texting app (Message+ from Verizon) and then the VPN screen flashed up repeatedly after pressing "accept" or whatever. I hadn't rebooted my device since the install, so I did. I haven't had a problem sense then, but I thought I would report it.

Aside from that the only difference I've notice with the new version is it seems more stable, but only 6 hours is a short time to really see results.

Thanks to the team at Covenant Eyes, keep up the good work!

No to be a Negative Ned :-), but there's still the MMS bug (i.e. VPN prevents the sending of an MMS, even without media content). Kind of a deal breaker for me, as my family and I MMS a lot. Plus, disconnecting the VPN to send an MMS is a bit of a hassle. Is there any way to fix this bug?

Were working on it. We promise. Its one of two big bugs that we are actively trying to kill. We felt like there were enough improvements in this version to give it into our members hands. I expect that it will not be long before we solve the MMS issue.

I installed the new version on my Note 4, running Android version 5.0.1, and I can no longer use my phone as a hotspot. Is there a setting I can change to make it work again, or what? Thanks.

Very excited for this new version, John. Kudos to the whole team. We've been waiting for this!

Installation was very smooth  -  I'll report back if there are any issues.

Thanks for the post John! I was very excited to install this and see that the WiFi calling/texting worked. Yahoo for having CE installed again!

I am installing version 2.9.9.36 on my Galaxy S3, and I use LastPass to fill login forms. When I got to the last step of setup to login, the LastPass overlay came up and said I needed to login. I tapped on that button, and I saw the LastPass app popup, but immediately disappeared, and I was back at the login screen for CE. So in other words, I can't use LastPass to login to the CE app right now.

I also noticed while attempting to login, when I would hit the Login button, my phone would appear to freeze for around 10 seconds or so. The first two times, it said I didn't have an internet connection (even though my wifi was connected and working). Finally, on the third try, it let me login, and everything was fine.

I installed version 2.9.9.36 on my Galaxy S3 yesterday, and I have noticed that my battery is draining crazy fast (can barely get to the end of the day before the battery is gone), and my phone seems more laggy than with 2.9.9.27. When opening up battery details in the Settings this morning, Covenant Eyes is the #1 app using battery. Note that this battery use was primarily overnight. I went to bed with the phone at 97% left, and when I woke up, I had 75% (the screen was off all night). I turned on the Bible app for 10 minutes this morning, and by the time I was done, the battery was already down to 70% (-5% in 10 minutes). Let me know what I can do to help troubleshoot this for you guys.

First of all, thank you to all the devs that have worked so hard on this app. Since updating to 2.9.9.36, I have noticed more frequent episodes of the VPN splash page repeatedly popping up. I have also noticed an elevated drain on battery life as mentioned above. I'm happy to provide more information as well as try any troubleshooting tips to assist with this release.

The battery drain is continuing to be an issue with my Galaxy S3. It varies from day to day. Two days ago, I still had 30% battery left at the end of the night, which was better. But yesterday, I had around 10% left at 6pm with barely any usage. Today, I noticed the phone was acting really laggy while using the YouVersion Bible app again. I kept pressing the back button while in the Bible app until I was back at the home screen, then long-pressed to swipe the Bible app away to close it, then went to the Task Manager to clear memory. My memory was at 1.43GB of 1.53GB. I tapped "Clear memory," but the memory didn't move from 1.43GB. So something is filling up my memory and keeping it from releasing. Then, since the phone seemed laggy, I went to the Developer Options and activated the CPU overlay and got a screenshot for you guys. I had closed all apps and cleared my memory, and CE still appeared high in the CPU list. Not sure if that means anything significant, but there it is.

Quick update: we have another build almost ready to ship. The new build should reduce the frequency of crashes, and shows promise as a means of reducing battery usage. I will keep you all updated as we continue to work.

I am very glad to hear that a fix should be available soon.  I am running the latest beta on Android 5.0.2, and have been plagued with the "Activate VPN" message to the extent that I have to reboot my phone (a 2014 Moto G2) to actually do stuff on it again.  I also noticed that the WiFi hotspot service does not function properly when the VPN is active.

I don't know how helpful this is, but I noticed in LogCat (I'm an amateur app developer/debugger) that the CE VPN service seems to be either doubling itself or not properly registering that it did turn VPN on (or both). I also noticed a lot of avc audits denying uid 2000 access to parts of the filesystem.  I don't know if that's related or even remotely helpful, but it looked significant.

I could email you the LogCat log, if that would help.

Battery drain has been really, really bad today. I was at 35% left by 1pm with only 30 minutes of screen-on time. Also, I have had the "VPN locked" error occur four times today so far. Haven't seen a pattern with it yet, except it seems that as different connections drop/reconnect, it seems to happen more. My cell data connection has been flaky today, so maybe that is affecting it. I am definitely looking forward to a more stable next version. :)

I have a Samsung Galaxy S6 with CE 2.9.9.36 installed.  Other than the MMS not working as already noted the other issue I'm having is with my e-mail.  I have my Time Warner Cable e-mail account set up on my phone, but it is not syncing my e-mails every hour like it's supposed to.  I have to disconnect the CE VPN and force stop on the Covenant Eyes application in order to get the e-mails to update.  Just wanted to let you know so you could investigate!  Thanks for all of your hard work!

FYI, I just installed the latest beta (2.9.9.41ao), and it resolved the issue with the e-mails not getting synched on my phone, along with the texting issue.

This may be redundant. Much higher battery usage/drain. I don't see VPN prompts popup. I'm on a One Plus, which runs a fairly large battery.

Context for the picture is 6/7 @ 12am to 6/8 @ 11am. 72% is quite high...

It also seems like "high" bandwidth tasks are slowed down considerably. Pandora seems to skip frequently. Also I can't cast my screen to a chromecast. I'm on a Nexus 5.

I too have the battery usage issue on my Galaxy S5 Active.  It is not always an issue though so Im not sure if it has something to do with open wifi that require login.  That is when I noticed the issue.  My phone connected to the wifi but could not connect because I had to go to the web page and accept terms.  The only reason I noticed the battery draw was because my phone was going nuclear in my pocket :)  When I viewed the battery usage it showed that Covenant Eyes had used 48%.

Thanks to the developers for all you are doing!  The VPN will be rad once everything is buttoned up.

Hey Folks,

We've got another build for you all to try.

This is build 2.9.9.41ao

This is an experimental build that should clear up many of the VPN related issues that you have been experiencing. Most notably:

No VPN Reboot Cycle
No MMS/SMS Bugs
No Double Data Usage
Reduced Battery Usage

As you may have guessed, this version we have removed part of the engine (the VPN part) to continue to tweak it and refine it's performance. The VPN will return, but we wanted to see if this hybrid version would make a potential release candidate in the meantime.  The app will still monitor...

Chrome
Chrome Beta
YouTube
Facebook
Twitter
Google Search
Browser

Please feel free to use this version and provide feedback on your experience.

Thanks

I've been running the new version since around 4pm or so, and it is stable so far. Battery usage has gone down to normal amounts, and the phone is no longer extremely laggy. Awesome!

@John Wa

Most of the time the beta does not require any specific upgrade instructions (it can usually be installed over top normally) I find it interesting that you guys had trouble with this one, I suspect it had to do more with how we named this version (how Android decides on which versions can upgrade) than anything else. Sorry about that.

Glad to hear it is working well for you guys. Please keep us posted

I also just tried to upgrade to the latest 2.9.9.42 and received the app not installed message. After uninstalling, I was able to install with no issues. The logon screen is a lot nicer and also impressed by the status screen. Thanks for staying on top of the issues and releasing updates fairly frequently.

I installed version 2.9.9.42 two days ago, and my Verizon Galaxy S3 has been rock solid since! CE is no longer draining my battery or popping up any messages. The only issue I've had is like others have reported, that when you "close all" open apps, CE pops up every time. It used to do this with the stable (non-beta) version of CE, but only after I would open up the CE app by tapping on its icon. Then, if I hit "close all," the CE app would pop up. But if I restarted my phone, the CE app would not be open, so it would then not pop up when I tapped "close all." Hope that makes sense. Great job, CE devs!

I uninstalled and reinstalled the new version and all is well.  But on the older versions I did not.  Not sure if we were supposed to before.  Maybe that is where some of the funny business came in.

Maybe I'm confused but the link you sent points to the previous build, 2.9.9.36? When I installed the program it asked me if I wanted to replace the version on my phone with that same name. Help.... thx john!

Thad, I noticed the same thing. I had to refresh the page to get the link to download the new version to show up. I also had to uninstall the previous version before I could install the new one.

I just updated to build 2.9.9.41ao. I too had to do the uninstall. Not a big deal, except I lost all my settings, like which apps are blocked and the fact that app blocker was turned on. Would be nice to avoid having to do an uninstall in the future.

Thanks for the update though.

Not really important but I can't close the covenant eyes app like my other apps. Every time I try it brings the home screen up. This might be necessary but would be nice if it was completely in the background.

I expect that that behavior is here to stay. (sorry)

Once upon a time I asked our devs about that, and was told that with the changes to Android & the way apps like ours have to work now, we have to actively run processes to make sure we are still protecting you, and to send logs, etc...

I will ask the question again, and let you know if anything has changed however.

I am in no way a developer, but I do know that it is possible to run apps without having them appear in the recent apps list.  This functionality may be extendable to running the application in the "background" and still capturing the data that is necessary.

Battery usage VPN popups, all gone. No issues. Had to reinstall but that's not even really a complaint.

Again, running OnePlus @ 5.0.2. Lovin' it. Status screen is rather interesting :)

I had that quite a bit before the newest update, that seemed to fix it for me. I found that reboting the phone fixed the problem for me in the short term when I used to have that problem.

Have you guys considered a way to have CE report when it's been turned off (not just when uninstalled)? I'm assuming Android allows apps to take an action when they receive a shutdown message from the OS. This would make the monitoring stronger. Thanks for considering.

Hey,
Not sure what happened but I was running beta for a while then the Google play store was updated so I think I switched to that. But anyways. Wondering if a problem I pointed out ealier was fixed. On lg g3 running lollipop one could easily just open a user/guest account and avoid all accountability. Because of this downgraded to kitkat. Has this been fixed BC I want to go back to lollipop. TIA
