No trouble doing the upgrade. I checked the detailed logs and there is nothing for the time the VPN went down. There is a gap in time and my activity during that time isn't there.

Thanks Adam.

This may sound odd but if you think of it, would you mind checking again in a few days just to be sure? We have seen odd time gaps between recorded and reported.

My experience is that sometimes when I install a new version of Covenant Eyes, it will then send what wasn't sent previously from whenever the older version broke. Could that be it? One time it was a week later and it was reporting as though it had all happened the day I installed the new version. That's happened to me in previous beta versions anyway (maybe a month ago, for example).

Good morning,

Does Beta 2.9.9.9 support Android 5.0 for Chrome Browser Tracking? I want to upgrade my Nexus 5 to the latest software but don't want to cause Covenant Eyes to misbehave more than before. I am currently on 4.4.1. I do not use App Locking.

Thank you kindly,
Peter

LG G3.
By the way, is there a way to get the Covenant Eyes and VPN notifications to stop displaying? I'm pretty sure the official release had the option of hiding the notification, and I'd rather not have the clutter.

The Covenant Eyes notification will eventually be able to be hidden - the VPN logo can't since the OS displays that icon and notification if any app is utilizing the VPN subsystem and we don't have any way to affect that.

If the VPN connection is turned off, can I still browse the web? (this seems like it would defeat the purpose?)  I just installed the beta and noticed that I was able to disable the VPN... but I'm thinking it can't be possible to bypass CE in such an obvious way. Just trying to get clarification here... thanks.

Robert,

The answer is "you should not be able to"

This build is still very much in Beta, so it is subject to occasional behavioral problems. That being said, when we release the app you will not be able to circumvent by simply turning off the CE vpn.

Thanks! I like the Android 2.9.9.9 beta... except that it's a bit too unstable to work with for much longer. I realize that this is the nature of beta software... but it would be easier to deal with if there was a quicker way to "restart" the software/VPN when the internet connection ceases to work. Looking through the forums, I have not found another way to correct problems other than to restart my Note 4. Not a huge deal, except that I usually either don't know there is a problem until I realize I stopped getting notifications I would usually get... or I'm using my Note 4 as a hotspot (frequently) and suddenly my connected devices can no longer connect to anything. Beta version 3.0 is coming out any day now? I'd like to stick it out and keep it installed if there is likely to be some improvement soon! Things are definitely on the right track... keep up the great work.

Not sure if anyone else experienced this but I just installed the beta and it activated Voice Notifications on my phone - every time i swiped to a new page I got an annoying "Page 1 of 2" etc.

I could only remove it by uninstalling Google Text to Speech updates ??

Just wanted to let you know.

I have also noticed that over the past 24 hours of running the app it has asked me to enable VPN 3 times even though I did that already.
It seems to be related to a change from wifi connectivity to connectivity via my data plan.

Speaking of VPN, there is a bit of a nuisance factor there in that I can't use any other VPNs on my devices as long as CovenantEyes is on. This keeps me from logging into work computers remotely via ssh. I don't think there's anything you can do about it, though, since android currently doesn't allow more than one VPN connection (and I'm assuming that the VPN thing is somehow integral to the newer functionality).

I am, however, noticing issues with connectivity, especially when downloading large numbers of files (like my music collection from Google Play). Some of it could just be the internet in my house, though - I have known issues with the wifi. That being said, I've noticed that sometimes neither wifi nor network data will function unless I restart the phone. This has already happened several times in just five days.

This seems to be a general problem with applications that use Accessibility services under 4.1.2 with Samsung devices. See:https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=23105

Samsung also knows about it: http://developer.samsung.com/forum/thread/samsung-devices-and-accessibility-services/77/204387

But, it looks like there is a fix available: http://developer.samsung.com/forum/board/thread/view.do?boardName=GeneralB&messageId=204387&startId=zzzzz~#post30

Hey Folks!

Sorry about the long silence. Development ran into some interesting bugs, which prevented us from releasing a new beta for a while.

Good News! We have a new beta version (the best one yet!)

Check out CovenantEyes.com/droidtest/beta to download 2.9.9.20

This version has fixes for many of the reported bugs, improved stability and browsing speed and more. Please try it out and let us know how it works for you.

Thanks again for your patience.

Just curious, will iOS ultimately use a similar solution, that is, a VPN?

Chance,

We are in talks with Apple about what it would take to deliver a similiar service on their platform. As far as I know the ball is still in their court. It is our hope to bring a similiar level of service to iOS, for those who love their iOS devices & want CE levels of protection.

Thanks for pointing that our Meir,

It's probably worth nothing that Curbi would be pretty good for protecting kids, but that it may not be an ideal solution for protecting adults and individuals who have motivation to get around the protection. For their sake (and yours/ours) I won't go into any of the limitations of their implementation, but it's not actually a true VPN type solution as far as I can tell.

The work that we are trying to do with Apple would be the first of it's kind, and we are really excited about the idea of bring a new level of depth to accountability on an iOS device.

Just installed the new version - so far so good.

However was hoping it would resolve an issue that Skype has no longer been working since installing this app. Skype loads and looks like its connected however no calls or messages go through - incoming or outgoing.  With the old version of the CE app loading Skype would actually kill my connectivity across the whole phone and I would need to restart (I assume some kind of conflict with the VPN).
Now with the new CE app version I just have localized skype problems with connectivity.

Just letting you know and wondering if anyone else experiences this. It may be my phone or just skype which is flaky!

Thanks for the feedback.

I will place the Skype bug in our board, and see if our dev guys can poke at it and see why it is not working. I know they are working on some upload stability currently, so it is possible that the two issues are related...

many thanks

One of the huge benefits to making this version available is feedback like this - thanks for your help in testing this. I haven't seen any of our test devices get particularly hot or use huge amounts of battery but it's great to get the app tried out on a wider variety of devices and find out these sorts of things. Honestly, we haven't really done any work on battery and power usage yet, we have been pretty swamped with just getting the basic of the update all functioning. Look for improvements in this area before too long.

Having a difficult accessing the link.  Thinking the spirit wants me to confirm before I install.  :)   Can you supply the link again that I should access from my son's android Nexus 10 tablet running Android version 5.0.1?  That is the same as Lollipop, right?  We had tried with an earlier version of CE while on line with support Dec 3rd ... it got hung up in a loop.  Support stepped me through the steps to remove it.  Will that issue be present.  Or, should this new beta version work on his device?  Thank you & God Bless!

In just 3 days my LTE data usage is showing as 2.30GB just for Covenant Eyes? I know it's not from using my Note 4 as a hotspot, since that has become less reliable since I installed the beta... so I haven't been using it the last several days.

Basically, since we are acting like a VPN, every app's data is being funneled through our app - so our app's data look extraordinarily high but all the apps being used should look correspondingly low since their data is being tagged to our application.

Ok, then I'm wondering if maybe being connected to a VPN "tricks" some apps into thinking that the phone is connected to WiFi? The only thing I can think of that would cause me to be on a 1GB per day pace is if things like pictures are uploading over LTE (when they are set to only upload when connected to WiFi).

I have installed 2.9.9.20 and when I am not on WiFi, I keep loosing my data connection every minute or two. My 3G icon will disappear and then re-appear after a few seconds and whatever app I am using at the time will tell me that it cannot contact their servers. Any ideas?

Interesting.

On WiFi is the issue less problematic?

I wonder if your wireless service is dropping enough packets to convince your device that the VPN has dropped.

With CE uninstalled, would you mind running testmy.net (a speed/connection test) and let me know your results?

I will pass this info along to our dev team and see if they have any more ideas

Actually checking it today, WiFi is just as problematic.

No Covenant Eyes and no WiFi:

No Covenant Eyes but WiFi on:

Covenant installed with no WiFi:

Same as above but the details page:

With WiFi turned on and Covenant Eyes installed, the test would not complete if the download file was above 4MB.

Thanks John,
I am finding that the app doesn't lock down the phone like it should. Sometimes it enforces locked down apps, sometimes it doesn't. Meaning, when my accountability partner picked up the phone to test and make sure certain apps were being locked down, they were not, even though they were set to in the app. She has check this multiple times with unpredictable results.

I know it's a work in progress. So I'm wondering:
  1. How us users can be most helpful in the testing.
  2. If we will be notified when any updates are made and a different version is released.
  3. If there is a compatibility issue/setting issue on Lollipop that could be changed to make CovenantEyes always block what is locked down.
Thanks for your support.

I figured out I had 2.9.9.20 installed. Updated to 2.9.9.23. Apps that CE is able to block are consistently blocked so far (only 15 min testing). However, two apps that CE shows as blocked but does not enforce: "Google" and "Voice Search" that's a big hole if filtering what is accessible is the intent.

I went the other route and disabled the apps through app manager. However, I was able to re-enable them again without going into settings (which is blocked and currently enforced) because Lollipop (or Galaxy) has a drop down for "show disabled apps" which allows you to start a disabled app.... even though it is disabled in settings.

Jesse,

Thanks very much for the feedback. We really appreciate the time & quality of the information you have provided here.

Our dev team is looking into the lack of locking Google &  Voice Search and we anticipate being able to solve whatever is causing them not to be locked. (likely a hangover from when Google dropped support for our old style of app locking...)

To give feedback on your previous comment

1. The way that users can be most helpful in testing is: Use the device like you normally would. Because we had to rebuild the engine that drives the new app from scratch, no amount of internal testing is going to be able to let us cover every possible scenario. Having people use the device like they would with any other CE product is super helpful to us. This means if you would normally just use the browser and trust CE, then do it and let us know how it goes. This also means that if you are the inquisitive sort and want to see where CE fails, then feel free to do that. The feedback we get here helps us be ready to deliver a complete package when we go live.

2. If we will be notified when any updates are made and a different version is released. Yes & much more yes to come. Right now we have a limited testing pool and are keeping the release fairly contained to this forum. Soon (ish) however we want to move the beta platform over to Google Play's Beta Channel. This means that testers will have to enroll, but they will automatically get updates whenever we ship them. (instead of having to do it manually) That will be phase 2 of testing and should include a brand new thread here for people to continue to provide feedback on.

3. If there is a compatibility issue/setting issue on Lollipop that could be changed to make CovenantEyes always block what is locked down Nope. Just strange quirks that pop up on different devices. Android is a fickle environment sometimes, and what works perfectly on one device (like my HTC ONE M8) may not work at all on another (say your GS5) This is partly why this is still in beta, and out dev team is really fast about responding to & fixing these issues as they crop up

Hey,
I just downloaded this new beta, I was just curious if your team was aware of a problem with the old system. Covenant Eyes would not load up for the first minute after powering on your phone, at which time the internet was completely accessible without any monitoring. Seems like this could be a problem for most developers just because the startup loading sequence for the Android device cannot be manipulated. It also causes problems because the lock app feature does not start up either until a minute after startup. Even if, for example, Google Play was locked, someone would still be able to go into it and download new apps before CE had a chance to kick in. Once downloading is underway there was nothing that CE could do to track it. Has your team discovered any work arounds to this problem with the new Beta app?

We haven't come up with any workarounds to the startup sequence. We have re-written a large chunk of the app locking engine to make things faster, though. The option in app locking to lock all newly installed apps could help in this scenario. Also, in the scenario you described, if you were to use that newly installed app, it would be reported in the app usage section of the Accountability Report for you partner along with the amount of time the app was used.

The app locking enhancements I mentioned above are not in the current beta version (2.9.9.20), but will be available in the next public beta version.

Dave,

Thank you for your quick and specific response! That is definitely good to hear.  Although I fear that there is still a concern with that minute of unmonitored internet access upon startup, as this is ample time for someone to get onto the internet and download videos that then go to the downloads app on the phone and are then, undetectable.  Do you have any encouraging news about any solutions you are working on for this problem?

thanks,

Aaron

Not to ignore my previous comment ... but in addition, I am finding the app locking feature on Beta is inconsistent. Perhaps there was some mess up downloading the new Beta from my old version. Sometimes it works, and other times it doesn't, specifically when I open the browser (which is app locked) through a link in my email app (cloud magic). Sometimes I get on the internet and can use it without the Beta noticing for 5-10 minutes. Fortunately CE can track the browser now, but this inconsistency might be happening in other areas with other apps that are not tracked.

Thanks,

Aaron

Hi,I just installed the new beta version of covenant eyes for my android device. The install worked but 2 pages keep on popping up no matter what I do. One of the pages says to enable accessibility which I press and then another opens up which says to enable vpn. Then the first page opens up again. I've tried restarting but it is still doing it. I can't use it at all and it won't even let my uninstall it

Hi! I've run into a couple problems with the current beta on my HTC m8. While CE is installed, i am unable to send or receive MMS messages (pictures, etc) But when i uninstall CE, they work as normal.
Also, a recent issue since i updated to Lollipop, with CE installed, my wireless internet connection does not work, but if i turn off wifi, and use data instead, everything works as normal. I uninstalled CE, and wifi works again.

I'm with telus canada. I find that if I reinstall ce everything works fine for a day or so, before the issues crop up again. This happened with ..20 and ..23. I don't know if it's an app issue or CE issue, but I've had lots of issues with my Wellsfargo app. Often it fails to access my account, sometimes it fails to pull the pictures of my checks for mobile deposits.

I'm using the current version of the Beta app (2.9.9.23) on Lollipop with a Galaxy S5.

Also, I still can open disabled apps through the Galaxy drop down on the apps menu. So even though I have disabled Google Search and Voice Search in settings, I can still open them. These two apps also will still run and operate without issues despite being locked in CE still. I'm hoping to see an updated beta release the fixes this, I'll let you know if it does.

Thanks for all you are doing!

Thanks for your quick response Dave!

Re: the VPN. I love it. Better accountability & (filtering?). Have you thought of people who may need to have a VPN into their companies server? Not an issue for me, just something I thought about.

Re: Google Search and Voice Search. I get the technical side of this. It's Androids fault for the change that these two apps are un-lockable. Yet still, not having the ability to lock those two apps creates quite a hole... Am I understanding that the team has given up on trying to figure something out, or are they just removing those apps from the lock list now so that people don't think they are locked when they are not?

Has anyone else thought of a work around for completely disabling them so they cannot be accessed? ... other than not using Lollipop.... or rooting the device and removing them from it completely (if that's even possible).

I sometimes do need to have a VPN, but I deal with it by working exclusively on a laptop for that work. My understanding is that Android doesn't currently allow multiple VPNs, so I don't know that I expect Covenant Eyes to be able to do anything about it, but if you ever can set things up in such a way that I can get my other VPN going, that would be great.

We have thought about the scenario where someone needs to have VPN access but we don't yet have a solution for that.

With regard to not being able to lock those apps, we have spent a huge amount of time trying to find any way whatsoever to lock those and come up empty on virtually all possible methods. At this point, we don't think there are any stones left unturned. It does create a hole in app locking, however those apps are still monitored so it doesn't provide and avenue for unmonitored access. I wish I had better news on that front.

RE: VPN - One option would be to have the ability to turn on or off the CE VPN from the accountability partners login on the device. If this could be setup, I would recommend that the VPN is on by default as it creates the best accountability. With it off, all traffic outside of the default browser is not tracked, which is why the VPN was thought of in the first place I'm sure.

Re: Google Search and Voice Search. I gotcha. Glad they left no stones un-turned. I get that monitoring is still in place, but my desire is to always "remove the hot coals from my lap" (Prov. 6:27) before I get burned and to remain blameless in all things (Philippians 2:15).   No reason to beat the dead horse for the team, I agree with their conclusion. I just hope they will be willing to re-visit this again in the future as the Lollipop OS becomes more known and how to detect these apps are running possibly becomes more available in future OS updates or something.

For me blamelessness is important, and this may mean downgrading to kitkat again somehow... though without rooting I don't think it's possible.
Hoping to find a different work around.

Thanks to you and your team Dave. Your work makes living in an up-side-down world more right-side-up.

Actually, with VPN off, we do track some things outside the default browser. We can track Chrome, if it isn't already your stock browser, and we also provide monitoring in the Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, and Google Search apps. In the current Google Play store version of our app, this isn't the case, but in the beta we have more than just the VPN or the old monitoring system at work.

We continually adjust what we are able to do as the ecosystem our app lives in evolves. As they update things, we remove things we are no longer able to do, we also add things we may gain the ability to add.

I would say that if pushing the panic button, that one of the partners or the guardian should be able to unlock the internet access. i wanted to test the panic button and i did. and i got really discouraged because i called customer support and no one was there so i was going to be blocked from using my phone and my laptop because i pushed the panic button.

I'm sorry about the trouble you experienced when trying to get a hold of us. I do like the idea of an administrator having the ability to reset panic mode. I'll pass this one along to our User Experience team.

Hi, I know this has been in development for quite some time, so... I wonder/ will it ever be ready for "out of beta mode", or for now is it just going to remain in beta due to all the changes that occur through updates etc, regarding the new ways that it monitors?

Hey Nichole,

Great Question.

The short answer is: As soon as we possibly can get it out of beta, we want it out of beta.

The longer answer is: we are doing stuff that has never been done on the Android platform before. Some of that stuff actually overwhelmed the capacity of the programming languages we were using to do it. (not enough speed & bandwidth). As a result we have had to modify our core "engine" in order to be able to deliver a stable experience. (Less crashing, less lag, more stability, etc)

Work is coming along nicely, and in the meantime we have killed MANY MANY bugs on our end. A time will come soon when we will move this beta over to the Google play platform, instead of being hosted on our website. Once the beta there proves stable, we will begin looking at actual release.

There is no way to give you a good estimate on time, certainly our goal is to have it in all of our members hands soon.

Thanks for the patience, I hope this helps you know that we are still plugging away.

Sounds good, I really appreciate the quality of a product like CE and look forward to the day when android platform can have further monitoring! I still think it's great in the meantime. Thanks

Hi I've been trying out beta 2.9.9.23 on the lg g3 for about an hour. My phone is running lollipop 5.0 and this version of CE seems to be monitoring and running pretty smoothly. I've found one glitch already and that is on lollipop you can just add a user at any time and that user will be able to get around covenant eyes and will have no monitoring. Did you realize this ?anything we can do? Thanks for all the hard work...no way to lock adding user with password from what i know... Dan

I'm not sure we had realized this before you posted. We do now, and our dev team is already looking into the problem.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention

So I have been trying to get the beta to work on my phone for some time and I have had two problems.  First, the old version will not uninstall.  The uninstaller crashes whenever I try and run it.  I tried downloading and installing the beta over it, but the install button doesn't work.  It only lets me click cancel.

Hey Alex,
Is there any chance your phone is running Android 5 or 5.01 (lollipop)? The Android 5 update is incompatible with our default download of CE for android. If your are, uninstalling via safe mode will be required. Getting to safe mode is slightly different for every phone so you will want to search "Safe mode [whatever phone you have]". From there, you will want to uninstall from your phone's app manager.

I hope this helps.

I have to say, I am extremendously disappointed. I just signed up because they said they have an android app only to find there isn't one. This sounds like a great system, however, if it doesn't work on my phone it is completely useless to me.

Hey Daniel,

Sorry about the frustration & confusion. We do ACTUALLY have an android app, (a normal one & a beta one actually) However the app is not currently available from the Google Play store due to some technical troubles at the moment....
~ It got taken down on Friday in the AM, it had been on the store for... 2 years ish?

To get the app from our site directly, simply visit www.covenanteyes.com/droidtest The beta can be downloaded from www.covenanteyes.com/droidtest/beta

We hope that the app will be back in the Google play store ASAP, and again apologize that you ran into this trouble.

Hello,

I just installed the beta today for my Samsung Galaxy s5. I'm finding that, while the Covenant Eyes VPN is connected, I am unable to send an MMS. However, when I disconnect the VPN and go back to my Messages app (have try a couple times due to the splash screen), the MMS goes through just fine.

Any other users experiencing this?

Thanks,
Joel
