For the reporting, in the accountability report it shows Pinterest as a high rated visited site 4 times even though I didn't visit it, it was linked to in a page I visited. Should that be showing up there, it just on the unconfirmed in the detailed logs? Also it is showing my activity through the news app I use but is there any way to track Wikipedia app activity? Also, I can select the option to disable the VPN and ignore the prompts to turn it back ok. Overall I am really impressed for such a early version. My phone hasn't crapped itself yet. ;-)

It looks like it actually logs more than I thought, but it's all in the unconfirmed entries, it's a lot to decipher. For every page I visit, either on the web or app, there are countless other entries for all the background stuff, often resulting in 600+ entries in a 15 minute period, which would make it tough for someone to easily see what was actually viewed. Is there a way to clean it up?

Clean up will come, that is a work in progress. (some tech limitations that we are working on as well) We certainly understand that the raw data stream is a little but cumbersome =P

This kind of feedback is overall really helpful tho. Thanks so much for participating. We will continue to post updates as we are able.

The amount of mobile data it uses is insane. I'm on WiFi most of the time, but it used about 115mb just being out for about 2.5hrs, it'll chew through my data when I go on vacation in a few weeks and am just driving.

Adam,

Thanks so much for the feedback. The Data usage thing caught us off guard when we first read it, but then after some conversation we have a theory...

Since Covenant Eyes is using VPN technology, it is entirely possible that all of your data usage is being routed through our app. Essentially our app is probably not using any more data than it used to, just the device now thinks that all of the data that your other apps are using is now listed as if it was Covenant Eyes.

Take a look at your total data usage and see if it is actually increasing significantly, our hunch is that Covenant Eyes is using slightly more data than it used to, but that the huge data increase is actually just semantics

Ok I'll keep an eye on that. I have T-Mobile and I can stream music through selected apps without it counting toward my data usage. Do you know if having all traffic routed through the VPN would mess with that due to the data being reported as CE instead of my music apps? That might be why it showed such a large number. I used both Spotify and Pandora during that time and neither showed up on that screenshot.

Huh, I do not know how their service tags "music"  Technically it may be possible for us to cause some problems... i will look into it more today.

It is also possible that on your phone Spotify and Pandora do not actually use data (the free music thing) so maybe they do not show up?

The phone still shows the app data, even though it doesn't count towards my data. I've shown another screenshot from pre-3.0. I think my carrier has a list of ports used by these apps or certain destination addresses and has it set to ignore them. It's called T-Mobile music freedom. I'll listen to a lot of music later and check tonight and see if I notice a large amount of data being recorded as being used on my online statement.

I think it should all work out. I checked my data usage from yesterday and it wasn't close to the 100+mb. Also, everything seems to still be pretty stable and working well.

I think some of the data usage from say other apps is being routed through Covenant Eyes.  Since the 5th my CE shows around 100 something megs (which is a bit, but nothing unreasonable).  I think some of this would have been associated with Chrome or perhaps google search or some other app, but instead the data is being associated with CE.  I wish I could prove this though..

So everything looks good for my data usage. Looks like it still gets reported to my carrier correctly :-)

Hello
I have just installed Covenant Eyes on all my devices and I have 2.9.9.2 on my Samsung Galaxy 3.  I really hate iPhones but I need to get the filtering working on my Galaxy.  Or do you know if filtering works on a Motorola Droid Turbo?
Eitherway I am an above average nerd and would really like to try out your Beta Ver 3 and give feedback.  Can you let me know where I can get it? or send me an email on where I can get it?
Thank you
Curt

Right now filtering is not available on any of our Android platforms, but the new tech in version 3.0 is leading in the right direction.

I will post a link to the 3.x.x test version soon, we are looking at compiling a new version this afternoon

I've noticed the VPN or new version of Covenant Eyes does slow my internet speed via wifi on my phone when I'm at home.  Typically I get a good 26mbps / 5 mbps but with the new app and a speedtest I might get 12-15 and 2.  It's not too noticeable in everyday use, but I did want to mention you should look at optimizing performance if possible.

@Matthew

Yeah the VPN does cause a bit of a slowdown. I know that there is continued work on improving the speed of the connection, although I do not know at what point we will be battling against the very limits of the tech we are using. Thanks for the information though. Follow up question, how often (if any) are you seeing crashes within the app?

I have occasional crashes where CE stops responding, but not too often. Maybe once every few days. The VPN stops more often though and needs to be restarted.

I agree with Adam.  The app has crashed maybe two or three times since we starts this testing.  The VPN does need to be restarted maybe once a day or once every couple days.  Either way, it seems to restart in both cases pretty well.  Um, I don't know if this is the place to put this..but there is an inherent weakness in both the deployed version of Covenant Eyes as well as this version which makes it possible to uninstall it without using a code.  I don't know that this can be corrected though.

Is there any sort of confirmation that my SurveyMonkey form went through? I'm definitely interested in testing, since I'm currently paying for an Ever Accountable subscription in addition to CE in order to get full monitoring on my Android device, and it would be great to be able to switch over to just CE.

The survey monkey forms all went through, and have been collected. We will roll this test out to a larger pool as soon as it is more stable. That being said, stay tuned on the forums for earlier access as we post more builds

Hold off on 2.9.9.6, I think 2.9.9.8 may drop sometime today.

I am having some serious issues with 2.9.9.8. I have to disconnect and reconnect the VPN any time I change networks, either wireless to wireless or wireless to mobile or vice versa. It is extremely slow and at times it can't figure out that the VPN is connected and eventually forces me to reboot just to use my phone at all, I can't even make calls. Lastly, I can't even uninstall it. I entered the code then it took me to the devide administrator setting which I disabled, but it took so long for it to disable that it wouldn't install. Once it disabled I then have the permanent page telling me that I need to enable device administrator uninstall, but I can't uninstall because I can't get away from the page to enable device administrator.

The VPN issue seems to have stabled out for the most part. It happens occasionally now but not like it did at first. I had to reboot my phone once to get the VPN to work today, but only once.

I just wish there was a way to get the notification hidden so I didn't have to explain it every time someone sees my phone notifications and wants to know what that key is.

I have not tried uninstalling other than the one time, so maybe it was a fluke since I did not see anyone else post about it.

My VPN has been having a lot of problems today. Still using 2.9.9.6. Only having problems when on my mobile network. I have to toggle airplane mode along with stopping and restarting the VPN.

Moving my response over from https://helpforum.covenanteyes.com/covenanteyes/topics/covenant_eyes_for_android_2_0_2_release_previ...

I can test further if the system would go down when the VPN would change networks - I can't be sure, I know at one point I tested with only data and another with only wifi - but it may already have been broken that restart.

Perhaps what Adam said and toggling Airplane mode and stop/starting the VPN would be the solution in those cases.
I'm on 2.9.9.8

VPN stability is getting worse while on mobile network, my phone at times is borderline unusable until I spend enough time toggling things. I'm still on 2.9.9.6, but I've heard.8 is also bad (which is why I haven't switched). Should I update or hold tight? No problems over WiFi.

I uninstalled the beta and reinstalled the stable version. The beta version has a long way to go before it is usable for me. I was on 2.9.9.8

I upgraded to 2.9.9.9 last night. I found last night that I could search but couldn't load the actual app page or download from the Google Play Store until I disconnected the VPN, then as soon as I disconnected it, the page loaded.

Same with Skype a few minutes ago, my message sat at "Pending" for 30 seconds, then as soon as I hit "Disconnect" on the VPN, it went to Sent ("Just Now").

Also, i think I didn't mention it before, *I have not tested this with 2.9.9.9* but in 2.9.9.8 when I tried to generate an Uninstall Code from the software, it froze. I had to generate on the computer and enter it instead. Might have been fixed with "Fix for an issue preventing uninstalls" but thought I should mention it.

Thanks,
Peter

That is good feed back Peter,

Yeah 2.9.9.8 had some potential strange issues with uninstalling, but hopefully they should all be worked out in 2.9.9.9

The Skype and PlayStore information is really helpful, I will make sure it gets passed along.

Thanks. It's been interesting, at different times pages or other apps won't load information from the network, I'll disconnect the VPN and things will work right away and be very fast - a few minutes later it will ask to connect the VPN again and then it'll break a few minutes later and I'd disconnect again, etc... It does operate a lot quicker in terms of disconnecting the VPN now than before.

For myself, I'd rather think that Covenant Eyes is working than have to shut it down myself to get the rest of the phone operational. I'd rather it worked always. of course, but if it's going to fail I'd rather it not do it visibly in such a way that I know I'm not protected (or be so buggy in terms of other data that I have to uninstall it and therefore be absolutely sure I'm not protected at all).

I would say that you and I are on the same page Peter,

TBH this VPN solution is a pretty huge endeavor, and there will be a while yet where we just keep finding areas where the program is not working well and tuning it up. Much of the framework (coding, visuals) is getting close to releasable. Meanwhile since we have essentially taken over all traffic on the device, we still need to increase our ability to handle traffic appropriately and forward it on without any complications.

This is where you guys come in, by helping us understand which scenarios and situations the app chokes in, we can find and streamline the trouble spots. I know it may not seem like it is even close to launch ready, (and we will not launch it until it is) we really are heading into the final phase of development here (which is awesome)

Thanks again everyone for the help so far. Hang with us, and together we will help define the future of CE on mobile devices.

Hi John

Thank you very much for being so forthcoming and communicating to the public this type of information on your software.  It is very refreshing to hear this from a company and the thoughtfulness and honesty.  This type of information is very helpful and personally gives me a great amount of faith in your company and products you produce.  You stand behind your products and work with the public to actually fix them and willing to take suggestions.

This is far and in between in today's society.

Thank you very much.
Curt

PS. I am very excited to see Version 3 when available.
I have a personal issue with the internet and your product is helping me greatly to overcome this issue.
Also I want to thank you for protecting my family from the evil things out there and your product provides that!!

Thank you

Yes, I second that John, thanks for all the feedback and information,

I definitely look forward to the next version and will let you know if things have improved and I'll try to post if I notice any other patterns.

About the Droid Test download page, you could try something like <META HTTP-EQUIV="PRAGMA" CONTENT="NO-CACHE"> or EXPIRES. More details here: http://www.htmlgoodies.com/beyond/reference/article.php/3472881

Maybe that'll make it easier for people to see the new version and get feedback to you faster :).

Thanks,
Peter

I upgraded to 2.9.9.9 and earlier the VPN shut down and wasn't promoting to be restarted. I was able to use my phone and browse the web without it. It took awhile but it eventually prompted to be stated back up. Not sure what causes it, I'll let you know if it keeps happening.

Yep, exactly. In my above post when I said it was working really fast after I hit "Disconnect" I meant I seemed to be able to browse the web with Chrome with seemingly no monitoring at that time and there was a definite speed difference (it was much faster). Thanks.

Adam, Peter,

Can you comment if any of your browsing does not show up in the report? We have found that sometimes during upgrade the VPN looks like it has crashed, but actually is sort of running. We have even seen activity during that state show up on later reports

As a side note, did you have any trouble doing the upgrade?

Sorry, just saw this.

I actually have a Nexus 5 device right now, brand new and not upgraded. You mentioned there are issues with CV on Android 5 (Lollipop). I do not use App Locking. Is CV broken more in 5.0 for regular browsing than in 4.4.1?

Thanks very much,
Peter

Headsup Folks,

We are aware of issues with some features of our App (both the current and the beta) with Android 5.0. For now I would advise not using App Locking when on Lollipop
