Android 7 issues

I have a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. I recently updated to Android 7 the first part of February. Since then I have been having major lag issues. I did a factory reset on my phone and things were working fine until I got CE back on my phone. Once I uninstalled CE again the lag issues went away. Any recommendations for how to address this?

Hello Travis,

Thank you for your post and I apologize for the difficulties you've been experiencing. Do you have any anti-virus apps or screen dimming apps running on your device? We do have a short list of apps that we don't play well with that could be the cause of the lag. If you have any kind of those apps on your phone I would suggest temporarily uninstalling those to see if your phone's performance improves.

If the performance does not improve or you do not have anti-virus or screen dimming apps to uninstall please contact our Customer Service for further assistance, 877.479.1119.

Best regards,
Annelise

I have had the same issues with CE on 5 Galaxy S7 Edge's and 2 Galaxy S7's running Android 7.0. In addition, I saw someone post a review on the playstore having the same issues with a LG V20. It's not device specific, it has to do with CE and Android 7. I'm getting ready to switch to another company if this can't be resolved very soon. CE renders our phones useless. Crashes really bad and takes 10-15 minutes to get it to restart. I too have done many factory resets. It always comes back to CE. I've disabled Lookout that comes pre-installed. I had Lookout on when I was running Android 6 and it worked fine with CE. Nothing works with CE running on Android 7. Please fix this asap. Thank you.

My son's android phone is ready for an upgrade. My wife has a galaxy s7 and she uninstalled CE after the nought update for the same reasons listed above. If LG is out and Samsung is out what android phones work? He was wanting a galaxy. I could stick him back on a Motorola? I personally don't want to switch companies. I use an iPhone and CE works well for me. We also use CE on all our computers.

I had similar major lag with my phone and CE after an update. I could barely text people back and was ready to toss my phone. My issue may not be the same thing, but here's what I did:

Clear All Cached Data
  1. From a Home screen, navigate: Apps icon  > Settings > Storage.
  2. Tap Internal storage
  3. Tap Cached data.
  4. From the Clear cached data prompt, tap OK.
Hard reboot phone
  1. Hold power button until hard shutdown
  2. press power button to start phone back up.
Not sure if that will work for you, but it was the fix for me.

ONE STEP I LEFT OUT: Boot into Safe Mode and then backout. IDK if it helps but it's something I did try.

It's not the phone, it's nougat. TheKneeland, I wish it were that simple. I've cleared cache, factory reset my phone, and even exchanged my phone for a new one. Every time I've installed CE fresh, not an update. This is a real problem that needs to be addressed. I've emailed CE several times and Annelise from CE who replied to a different post and have not received any response at all. It's very frustrating.

I checked and the update I was dealing was also Nougat Andriod 7.

One thing I did leave out, was that I uninstalled CE before running the Andirod update. I read somewhere on the forums a while back to do that and did it without thinking to mention it.

Another step I left out, becuase I doubt it makes a difference is that I booted into safemode and than back out.

Also, I have a Driod Turbo 2 and am on day 3 with Andriod 7 Nougat and CE with no issues after doing these steps (and have had several background apps running too).

Hello!

Thank you all for your posts. John, I have responded to the email I received from you with instructions on how to install and test a previous version of our software on your Android.

For anyone else experiencing these similar symptoms we've seen, on a limited basis, success with downgrading. If you would like instructions on how to do so you can email me at annelise.h@covenanteyes.com

Or if you try the instructions that our user TheKneeland has provided please share in a post if that was successful for you. That will be very helpful to our developers to know.

If you have any further questions or need assistance please feel free to contact our Customer Service at 877.479.1119

I have experienced the same issues since my phone (Galaxy Note 5) received the upgrade to Android 7. My phone will start lagging more and more until it won't even light the screen up. Removing CE solves the problem instantly and makes it run like new out of the box. I have come up with a method to keep it from getting bogged down enough to crash. It makes use of developer mode, so be very careful if you are going to attempt using this method.

1. Enable Developer mode: Settings -> About Device -> Click on "Build number" until you get a message that says "Developer Mode Enabled" or similar.
2. Go back to Settings
3. Go to Developer Mode (it's listed at the bottom)
4. Scroll down to Applications Section. Check the box "Do not keep activities."
5. Select "Limit Background Processes" and reduce to 2 or less. My phone did not crash at all when I selected "No background processes"

That's it. I found this makes my phone slower (but stable) for everyday use. Bear in mind that it will not multitask, so when you hit the home button, your app will close completely, not be suspended in the background. I am running my phone like this until Covenant Eyes releases a fix for Android 7 that addresses the lagging issue.

Cheers,

So I went to the link you emailed me and downloaded the apk's for both the current version and the older version. I installed the current version to test if it's a bad download from the google play store and if a direct download/install may work better. I immediately cleared the cache, shut down, and waited a full minute before restarting the phone.

So far I am not having any problems but I haven't used my phone all that much today since I'm at work. If it starts giving me issues I will try the older version.

UPDATE: I was delayed in posting this and in the meantime CE crashed my phone pretty bad. I'm going to try the older version now. I would rather try this before doing the developer's mode fix because I want multi-tasking. Thanks for the input. I will try that next if this fails.

I have also signed up for the Beta program and will eagerly test a newer version once it is available. Thanks for the help.

Going to also do this on my son's phone to see if it works for him as well.

Update to my earlier post.

I have turned off the "Do not keep activities." checkbox and left my background processes limited to 2 and so far my phone has been fine. The swipe action of my keyboard still isn't totally smooth but my phone has remained functional now for 3 hours since I changed the settings earlier after my post.

It seems that CE gets affected more depending on the number of processes your phone is running. I believe that some changes were made to the Android operating system that no longer allows apps to track certain information about other apps, such as time run and used, etc. I could be wrong about that, so I recommend more research be done to confirm. I know CE has the ability to track app use for time and frequency, so I'm wondering if Android's new design is hampering the software and causing it to hang and hold up the phone. It would make sense as the more apps I have run the more it lags.

Hope this helps!

Just bought a Galaxy S8+.  I'm very nervous about installing CE on it, as I had the identical problems you all have been describing on my S7 Edge+.  Anyone with an S8 encounter these problems?

Hello mbkal,

Thank you for your post. The issues that we've been seeing with CE and Android phones has not been due to the type of phone a user has, but about the operating system, these devices have installed. If the S8 is running Nougat (7.0) it's possible you'll experience the same issues.

Luckily, we've had success with a slightly older version of Covenant Eyes that we could try installing on your Galaxy 8. If you'd like to do that feel free to email me at annelise.h@covenanteyes.com and I would be more than happy to send you instructions on how to install that version of Covenant Eyes.

Best regards,
Annelise

I noticed a newer version of CE on the play store version 3.0.4.0 dated June 6,2017. I waited about a month and monitored reviews to see if this version placed nicely with Android 7. Sadly, all comments were based on the older version. No one was brave enough to try it out. Being a "registered beta user" I decided I would be the guinea pig.

Here was my process:

1. Knowing that updating CE often causes issues I notified my accountability partner and removed CE.
2. I then performed a clean install.

Results: Things were running fine but I still would get an occasional crash/sluggishness when typing a message so I would restart the phone, clear cache, fix battery issues, and clean the memory. What I noticed each time was my keyboard was what was causing the crash. So I changed my keyboard to a different 3rd party keyboard. I have a Galaxy S7 Edge and haven't used the Samsung keyboard for many years. I still crashed at least once a day.

****Mind you, these crashes were nothing like what CE used to cause where it would take me 10-15 minutes to be able to get to a point to even restart the phone. I was very quickly able to restart.****

3. So I then decided to do full Google and Samsung backups and factory reset my phone.
4. I opted to do full restores of all apps and data and was up and running again in no time at all.
5. I then setup CE and logged in.

Results:

I actually like my phone again whereas I actually began to hate it. It's snappier and hardly ever lags. I do keep a regular eye on phone maintenance and keep everything clear but I rarely lag and when I do, a simple reboot clears everything back up. This is normal as phones are very technical pieces of electronics which are made by people. They will get hot, slow down, overbuffer ram, and just plain act silly from time to time.

Long story short:

The new version seems to be working great right now. Thank you CE.

Is there any update for Android? I have a Samsung S8.

I have the BETA for CE and it still freezes. It may not freeze as often but it is still bad. I am freezing 7 to 8 times a day instead of 10. It is very frustrating and I don't get why this can't be fixed. I am sorry for my frustration but I want to keep CE so that I can stay accountable and keep filtering and tracking everything on my phone to help me keep looking to please Christ.

I know some have mentioned it has something to do with the keyboard but is there not a fix coming still? Thanks

I have been struggling with this problem for a few months now as well.  I'd really like this fixed... when can we see a new update?  The lastest version on the play store is as of February... its already August.

Annelise, I emailed you for a link and instructions to the apk of the older version as well, thank you!
